The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon boss explains Carol's Greenland detour

As a seasoned gamer with a knack for navigating through the apocalyptic landscapes of various video games, I must say that “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol” has managed to bring a fresh twist to the zombie survival genre I’ve grown fond of. The Greenland episode was particularly intriguing, a testament to the creativity and storytelling prowess of the showrunners.

In the initial episode of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol“, Carol persuades her newly discovered aviator companion Ash to pilot her over the Atlantic Ocean to France, deceiving him into believing she’s searching for her daughter Sophia when in fact she’s seeking her friend Daryl. However, Ash’s aircraft is compact, thus they must pause briefly in Greenland during the second episode. There, they run into a small band of survivors and come face-to-face with revolting swamp-inhabiting walkers. They also cross paths with a pair of scientists.

It was David Zabel, the showrunner, who proposed the concept of having part of the episode take place in Greenland. In his words to The Hollywood Reporter, “This one originated with me.” They decided against having Carol simply appear in France, making things too convenient. Instead, they knew the plane wouldn’t be able to go directly there and would need a stopover. So, they began discussing Greenland as a potential location, considering who might still be there and what kind of story that could create. They spent time brainstorming about the unique characteristics of the walkers in Greenland, especially the marshy ones, and then considered who would be there and how that could make an engaging tale.

Initially, the two researchers living in isolation in Greenland may seem harmless, but it becomes evident that they harbor sinister intentions. They view Ash as a potential mate for reproduction purposes, aiming to repopulate a world decimated by a zombie outbreak. However, despite their scientific backgrounds, their intelligence is questionable. As Zabel explains, “We thought that perhaps two researchers could have survived, holed up in their station. After the apocalypse, they managed to carry on living there. We were able to create an engaging narrative from this premise.

Regrettably, just one episode delves into the Greenland narrative. Due to time constraints, the writers primarily aimed to advance Carol’s journey to France. As Zabel explained, “Given a different scenario, we would have devoted more time to exploring Greenland, but we were limited to six episodes.

Every Sunday, I tune into AMC for more thrilling episodes of Daryl Dixon’s prequel show. Can’t wait for the moment when Daryl and Carol cross paths again, but with such captivating stories unfolding, I’m more than happy to take a few side trips first!
