The Voice Australia fans call out 'underwhelming' finale: 'What on earth has happened to Australian TV?!'

As a die-hard fan of The Voice Australia, I must say that this year’s grand finale left me feeling more than a little underwhelmed. The pre-recorded reactions seemed so staged and lacked the raw emotion that we’ve come to expect from such a high-stakes competition. It’s like watching a movie where you know the ending before it even starts!

Audience members of The Voice Australia have criticized the final episode, focusing on one particular aspect they found ‘disappointing’.

On Sunday evening, the concluding event of 2024 took place, during which Reuben De Melo, accompanied by LeAnn Rimes, was announced as the victor of the vocal contest.

The father-of-three appeared shocked when host Sonia Kruger told him he had won $100,000 in prize money and an artist development package with Studios 301.

Instead, unhappy spectators criticized the finale for being prerecorded, arguing that Reuben’s response seemed less enthusiastic than expected.

In previous seasons of The Voice, the finals were held live. However, for the past few years, the competition has been precorded ahead of time, and four different possible endings have been filmed as alternatives.

The final competitors won’t learn the outcome until Channel Seven broadcasts the show following public voting, which has sparked complaints from some viewers that Reuben’s response appeared insincere.

On social media, a passionate fan expressed their frustration by saying, ‘I wish it had been live so that we wouldn’t have to deal with pre-recorded, staged responses.’

Another questioned: ‘Can they bring back live results reactions?! His reaction seemed so underwhelming.’

A third commented: ‘I can’t get my head around pre-recording the result. It takes the emotion out of the result. Reuben seemed totally underwhelmed.

It appeared that his family was both joyous and teary-eyed, yet we suspect they were merely putting on a show. This, unfortunately, diminishes our enjoyment while observing them.

While another raged: ‘Why was the Finale prerecorded? Either have a live finale or don’t bother, ridiculous to end it like that, did you record every artist winning? What on earth has happened to Australian TV? On a happier note, congrats Reuben!’

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must say, he comes across as genuinely kind-hearted. This isn’t intended as a criticism, but rather an observation about the pre-recorded nature of the event. At that stage, no victor had emerged, so all reactions were staged. Yet, his performance was nothing short of extraordinary. Kudos to him! He is truly remarkable.

Reuben’s pal left a comment on The Voice’s Instagram post announcing the winner, stating that the singer’s response appeared significantly more authentic during the original broadcast of the show.

Here’s a possible way to rephrase that sentence in natural and easy-to-read language: “One of my best friends is Reuben. Recently, we had a watch party together, and let me tell you, he was thrilled when he found out the news!

I’m confident that he will post it on his social media. It was an exceptional moment, and there couldn’t be a more fitting winner!

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but share my feelings about Bella Taylor Smith’s 2021 show experience. She expressed that the peculiar challenge of recording four distinct finale outcomes in a single day felt surreal to her.

‘The night of the grand final was full-on busy because not only did we have to film the four alternate endings, but also the four singles performed at the end,’ she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

That evening, not only did we perform our duets alongside our coaches, but we also showcased our solo acts. Afterward, it was time to tidy up the scattered confetti and handle various tasks that followed.

On the final night of Sunday, Reuben confessed that he hadn’t anticipated reaching the end of the contest, since he was announced as the victor of the 2024 competition instead.

In my wildest dreams, I never imagined reaching this point; it’s absolutely unbelievable, I found myself saying during my victory interview.

Elsewhere, celebrity coach LeAnn was quick to share kind words for her mentee following his triumphant win.

‘I’m so proud,’ the Can’t Fight The Moonlight singer gushed.

“This moment belongs entirely to you, and I feel privileged to share this journey with you. Truly, you are extraordinary.

Reuben competed in the grand finale alongside Annie Jones from Team Adam, Jaedyn Randell from Team Kate and SKŸE from Team Guy.

Reuben was awarded a total of $100,000 as prize money, along with a music workshop opportunity and assistance for professional recording at Studios 301 located in Alexandria.

It was the first year the winner was not offered an automatic record deal with Universal Music Australia or EMI Music Australia.

It was claimed the controversial move could actually be a good thing for the 2024 winner and break the ‘terrible cycle’ of talents failing to profit of their wins.

Judge Kate argued that being tied to a big record label at the start of one’s career could turn into a burden instead of an advantage, which is why she supported the change.

Previously, certain artists were found signed to big record labels without fully understanding their own artistic identity, as shared with TV Tonight.

It’s important for artists to have enough time to develop their skills, and it might not be wise to sign with a major record label immediately, especially when you’re young or inexperienced, as the pressure could be overwhelming.

In a breathtaking final solo performance of House Of The Rising Sun by The Animals, Rueben left all four coaches in awe, with Kate-Miller Heidke praising it as ‘exceptional’.

LeAnn couldn’t help but keep grinning, impressed by your exceptional performance. It was truly extraordinary,” LeAnn remarked, as she too stepped onto the stage with Reuben to perform a touching rendition of ‘Fix You’ by Coldplay.

In his debut Blind Audition, Reuben managed to win over Australian spectators, as well as the show’s judges Adam Lambert, Guy Sebastian, and both Kate and LeAnn.

Eager to snap him up, LeAnn used her Ultimate Block to guarantee he would be on her team.

From the moment he began to sing, it was clear to her – the emotion was palpable,” she remarked back then.

‘There was no way I was letting any of the other coaches get to him before I did.’
