The Vivienne’s final public appearance revealed just days before the Drag Race UK winner’s shock death aged 32
In simple terms, Vivienne performed an astonishing show for fans only a few days before their unexpected passing, which took place in Blackpool.
The news that the skilled drag performer, originally known as James Lee Williams, passed away was shared on social media platforms yesterday. The reason for his death remains undetermined at this time.
I, a die-hard fan, couldn’t contain my excitement as tributes flooded in for The Vivienne, the queen who took the crown on RuPaul’s Drag Race. And now, the icing on the cake – her final public appearance was none other than starring in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang last weekend! Oh, the joy it brings just thinking about it!
A picture posted by the ITV manager, who attended The Vivienne’s performance as The Childcatcher, depicted them both grinning.

An ITV executive shared a photo after watching The Vivienne perform as The Childcatcher; in the image, they were both seen smiling.
‘Truly devastating news about The Vivienne. I saw them perform as The Child Catcher at Chitty in Blackpool last Sunday, and they were exceptional – they truly owned the role.’
In this version, I have used gender-neutral pronouns for The Vivienne to be more inclusive. Also, I replaced the informal “was incredible” with “were exceptional” to maintain the plural form of the subject ‘The Vivienne’.
I’m utterly heartbroken for the family of The Vivienne, sending my deepest sympathies to each and every member of the incredible @ChittyOnTour team. I can only imagine how hard this must be hitting them all.
Starting from April 2024, I embarked on a journey across the United Kingdom. This tour, planned to conclude in Plymouth on May 10, has me stepping into the shoes of the Childcatcher, as portrayed by EastEnders and Dancing On Ice star Charlie Brooks, from April 1 onwards.
In a new update on Monday, police revealed that they found ‘no suspicious circumstances’.
At 12:22 PM on Sunday, police officers responded to a location in Chorlton-by-Backford after receiving information about an unexpected fatality that had occurred.
A representative from the police department stated that they responded to the scene, examined the details surrounding the deceased 32-year-old man’s death, and found no indication of anything unusual or criminal. They will now compile a report for the coroner.
As a devoted admirer, I regretfully share the heartbreaking news I received through Instagram. Simon Jones, The Vivienne’s publicist, informed us all of the tragic loss of our cherished James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, who passed away over the weekend.
James was deeply cherished, kind-hearted, and extraordinary. His family is devastated by the passing of their beloved child, sibling, and relative.
They take great pride in the remarkable accomplishments James made throughout his life and career, but we won’t be disclosing any additional information.
Let’s give James’s family some space and time to mourn and cope with their loss privately.
He added: “These aren’t words I ever wished to utter. Viv was not just a friend or a client, but someone I held dear and cherished greatly.
Since our first encounter back in 2019, it was evident to me that we had the potential to produce something extraordinary together. As a result, I took on the role of their manager. The sheer talent these individuals possessed was indescribable, and they managed to illuminate every space they entered with an awe-inspiring radiance. Among them, Viv stood out for me in a unique way. Their humor was infectious, and no one has ever made me laugh as much throughout my life as Viv did. Their comedic prowess and sharp intellect were truly exceptional, like nothing I had encountered before.
I’ve felt incredibly fortunate and pleased to have Viv as a significant presence in my life for the past five years. It’s deeply saddening that their promising career was cut short. In the realm of musical theatre, Viv discovered a niche where they felt passionate, shone, and flourished.
‘I am heartbroken and devastated at this news. RIP my wonderful friend. You left us way too soon.’
As a die-hard fan, I proudly go by the moniker “The Vivienne,” named after my admiration for the iconic designer, Vivienne Westwood. Later, I was honored to be one of the ten competitors chosen to strut my stuff on the inaugural season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK – a dream come true!
After securing the victory, I embarked on a journey hosting an engaging online talk show, where famous faces and I chatted about various episodes of the series. Subsequently, I delved into the world of musical theatre. More recently, you can find me spreading holiday cheer as the host of a festive radio show on BBC Radio Wales.
A flood of tributes came in for the celebrity, with Tia Kofi, the victor of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs The World, expressing: ‘This is a truly devastating loss for the British drag community as well as the world at large. Vivien represented the pinnacle of British drag both on stage and in international media.’
She served as a guide, a source of motivation, and more than just a colleague. Her absence will resonate strongly within our community. I’ll always cherish you, Viv.
As I scroll through my Instagram feed, I come across some images shared by Michelle Visage, a dear friend and esteemed judge from Drag Race. Caught up in the moment, I find myself at a loss for words, struggling to express the depth of emotions these photos evoke within me. The caption reads: “Heartbreaking. I don’t know how to say how I feel.” These words resonate with me deeply as The Vivienne and I share an unbreakable bond.
‘Dear @thevivienne_, our friendship dates back to when I first came to the UK. You’ve always been a source of joy, generosity, and sharp wit for me since then.’
Your humor, intelligence, skill, and personality – every bit of it was delightful, but what I cherished the most was our friendship. You shone brightly for so many people.
Watching you take your first bow on the West End was a truly inspiring moment for me, as it felt like I was watching your long-held dream unfold before my very eyes. It’s an incredible privilege to call myself a friend of yours and to have shared so many joyous moments with you through laughter.
As a lifestyle guide, I fondly express my affection: “My dearest one, your absence will be deeply felt and profoundly missed. May the radiance of your spirit burn brightly, eternally. Rest in peace, my cherished angel, soar to new heights.
On platform X, previously known as Twitter, Rylan expressed his sorrow by saying, ‘The news concerning The Vivienne is heartbreaking.’ She was an exceptional entertainer. Her departure leaves a void. May she find eternal peace, beautiful soul xxx.
The cast members of Vivienne’s series one expressed their condolences, as Blu Hydrangea posted: ‘I’m deeply saddened to learn about the passing of a cherished friend and fellow cast member.’
‘I will love you forever Viv,’ Cheryl said, and Crystal added: ‘I can’t believe this.’
The star subsequently featured in the All Winners series of the American variant, and fellow cast member Trinity The Tuck lamented: ‘I’m heartbroken.’
‘I’m in complete and utter shock. This is so devastating,’ said Shea Coulee, while
Ashley Roberts, a member of The Pussycat Dolls, expressed her feelings below Michelle’s post by saying: “I can’t believe it! This is heartbreaking news. May Viv’s soul find peace.” Kimberley Wyatt, another bandmate, commented: “I’m devastated and in shock. I’m deeply sorry.
In my own words, I’d express it like this: “As a devoted admirer, I, too, pay homage to the extraordinary being that is The Vivienne. May you rest in eternal peace, but always keep radiating your stunning light upon us.
‘Love and strength to all your family, we will miss you so much.’
Marisha Wallace, known from her roles in the West End and Big Brother, expressed her astonishment: “I can hardly believe it – I chatted with Viv only a week ago. Oh my goodness! Let’s offer our prayers to the family during this difficult time.
Jayde Adams expressed: ‘I’m utterly devastated by this news. The brilliance of The Vivienne was unparalleled, and her influence will last eternally. My dear Simon, I can hardly express the depths of my sorrow for your loss and that of her family. Keeping you in my thoughts and sending you all my love.’ ❤️
The unexpected demise of the drag artist occurred merely a few days following their expression, during a victim impact statement, that they hoped to encounter individuals who appreciate and love members of the LGBTQ+ community when meeting strangers.
Comments ensued following the decision made by magistrates last month, classifying a single punch assault by scaffolder Alan Whitfield on The Vivienne as a hate crime.
Last year on June 16th, The Vivienne – a winner from the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and a third-place finisher on Dancing On Ice – became a victim of an incident at a restaurant located on Edge Lane.
The defendant launched a series of harsh insults at them, followed by a powerful hit on the left side of his face.
For about a week, their face bore both bruises and pain, yet Vivienne mentioned that fortunately, due to their past as a 6ft former rugby player accustomed to taking hard hits, they were able to endure the impact, as reported in Liverpool Magistrates’ Court.
In a statement presented to the court on Wednesday, The Vivienne expressed: “I’ve always been unapologetically myself as a gay man, never concealing my identity nor altering my true nature.
At 31 years old, it’s a troubling realization that I could potentially face an attack just by living my everyday life.
‘This has caused me stress, anguish and ongoing trauma.’
Previously, they created history by being the first drag artist to take the stage on Dancing On Ice. The audience hailed them as a ‘spectacular’ or ‘exceptional’ performer.
Vivienne and her professional dance partner, Colin Grafton, were delighted as their combined score was 28.5 out of 40. Judges Ashley, Oti, and Jayne each assigned them a score of 7, while Chris awarded them a slightly higher 7.5.
Otis admired The Vivienne’s debut act: “If you aim to create history, this is the way to do it! Well done!
