The Vivienne was bombarded with homophobic abuse after their Blankety Blank Christmas appearance which aired days before their tragic death, reveals BGT drag act Myra DuBois
After appearing on Blankety Blank during Christmas, The Vivienne encountered a heavy barrage of abusive comments that were discriminatory towards homosexuality.
Over the past weekend, I sadly bid farewell to the captivating drag artist who went by the stage name that honored him as “James Lee Williams.” At only 32 years old, his life was cut far too short. As of now, the specific reason behind his passing remains undisclosed.
On the eve of their untimely demise, The Vivienne graced our screens one last time during the BBC’s Blankety Blank Christmas special, which was hosted by Bradley Walsh and aired on December 26th.
In the prerecorded broadcast, The Vivienne was present alongside Jonathan Ross, Oti Mabuse, Jane McDonald, Joel Dommett, and Sara Pascoe.
Following the passing of The Vivienne, Myra DuBois (real name Gareth Joyner) from Britain’s Got Talent took a stand against internet bullies who targeted The Vivienne with mean-spirited comments after their appearance on television.
Myra, who made it to the semifinals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2020, posted on Instagram: ‘I’m puzzled about how The Vivienne departed from us, and I will honor their family’s request for privacy by avoiding any attempts to dig deeper or stir up speculation.’
I’m aware that following their appearance on Blankety Blank during Christmas, they were subjected to a large amount of abusive comments that were homophobic in nature.
As a devoted admirer, I too am aware that the comment sections of such postings are becoming filled with phrases like “one less” and “may they rest in an unwelcoming place.
It is important for you to be aware of this fact, and I would appreciate it if you could openly acknowledge it. Whether you are speaking to me, your colleagues, or even your family, I want you to express this acknowledgement, especially when there are no LGBTQ+ individuals present.
Instead of merely expressing your sadness whenever a member of the LGBTQ+ community passes away, let’s take action together! I challenge you to question and ensure that you’re actively contributing to the survival and thriving of every LGBTQ+ individual.
Myra went on to ask her followers if they ‘challenge transphobia when they encounter it’.
The TV host mentioned: ‘Do you consciously try to employ pronouns which may initially seem unclear to you?’
‘Do you post comments of love so they drown out comments of hate?
Do you stand against political parties that openly discriminate against individuals within the LGBTQ+ community, regardless of whether their views coincide with yours on other matters?
It doesn’t matter to me what your response will be; that’s for you to decide. However, over the past few years, I’ve lost numerous friends who identified as part of the LGBTQ+ community, and it seems they were taken from us much too early.
As a committed supporter, I want to clarify that it’s not due to a personal lifestyle choice, but rather the weight of stigma and shame. The tragic reality is that society has inflicted violence upon the LGBTQ+ community, and I cannot express enough how enraged I feel about this injustice.
News of the talented drag artist’s death was announced across social media on Sunday.
Heartfelt tributes were offered for the late celebrity, hailing from Wales, by numerous individuals, such as their former spouse David Lufton, Michelle Visage (a judge on Drag Race), and fellow star Tia Kofi. Each of them expressed their sorrow over the loss.
According to a post by her publicist Simon Jones on Instagram, it is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James Lee Williams, better known as The Vivienne, over the weekend.
James was deeply cherished, filled with kindness, and simply remarkable. His family is devastated by the passing of their beloved child, sibling, and relative.
They take immense pride in the remarkable accomplishments James made during his life and career, but we won’t be disclosing any more specifics.
Let us kindly request some space and privacy for James’ family as they take the time to mourn and come to terms with their loss.
He went on saying: “It’s not a sentence I ever wished to compose. Viv was more than just a friend, also a valued client, and someone I held dear.
Since our first encounter in 2019, I felt an immediate connection with them and took on the role of their manager. Their talent was simply extraordinary, radiating a captivating energy that illuminated every space they entered. No one has ever brought as much laughter into my life as Viv did. Their comedic brilliance and sharp intellect were truly exceptional.
I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful that Viv has been an integral part of my daily life for the past five years. It’s heartbreaking to think about the promising career that was just starting out. In the realm of musical theatre, Viv discovered a niche they were deeply passionate about, excelled in, and flourished within.
‘I am heartbroken and devastated at this news. RIP my wonderful friend. You left us way too soon.’
Vivienne, who became well-known for sporting designs by Vivienne Westwood, was given their name. Later, they were chosen as one of the ten competitors in the inaugural season of Drag Race when the show made its way to another country.
After their victory, The Vivienne subsequently started hosting a digital talk show where famous personalities engaged with her in discussions about the series of the show. More recently, this entertainer has been hosting a Christmas special on BBC Radio Wales.
