The VERY woke backstory of Disney’s new nepo-baby leading man: As Milo Manheim makes Oscars debut… his gay dad, Hollywood icon mom and her ‘taboo’ pregnancy reads like another liberal film script!

Following years of criticism over perceived progressive content, Disney might be gauging audience reaction with the casting choice for its newest fairytale lead.

Milo Manheim, an actor known for his famous parents, is getting attention as he prepares to play Flynn Rider in the upcoming live-action version of the popular animated movie Tangled. People are especially interested in his family background.

Milo’s origins are like a modern Hollywood story: his parent was a famous television star, and his birth involved methods considered unconventional for that era.

Disney is facing a difficult moment. They’re still recovering from the disappointing performance of the recent Snow White remake and a costly legal settlement with actress Gina Carano, who was fired from The Mandalorian after making controversial statements.

Following disappointing performances by recent Disney animated films like Lightyear and Strange World – both of which included LGBTQ+ themes – all attention is now focused on what Disney does next.

All eyes were on Manheim as he made his first appearance at the Oscars on Sunday, looking sharp in a black suit and sunglasses.

Milo Manheim, age 25, is the son of actress Camryn Manheim, who is famous for her roles in popular TV shows like The Practice and Law & Order. She’s also well-loved by LGBTQ+ audiences for films like Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.

Camryn became a single mother in 2001 when her son was born through in vitro fertilization, or IVF. While it wasn’t a common choice for having a baby back then, it reflected a shift in how Hollywood viewed families.

The person who donated the sperm wasn’t a romantic partner. It was her close, longtime friend, Jeffrey Brezovar – a gay man who was openly proud of who he was and a familiar face in fashion ads during the 1990s.

Brezovar quietly donated to help Camryn, and People magazine later revealed he was with her in the delivery room, describing it as a particularly joyful experience for her.

Four years after that, Brezovar was featured on the cover of Out magazine with the headline: ‘He’s a model, a father, and openly gay.’

Okay, so Brezovar was being super cagey, but he basically admitted he helped a famous friend have a baby! And honestly? Everyone immediately knew he was talking about Camryn. I mean, come on, it was so obvious! The pieces just fell right into place. I’ve been following Camryn for years and this just… it makes so much sense!

Fast-forward two decades, and the modern family dynamic remains strong.

Now 53 and based in Santa Fe, Brezovar frequently shares updates and reminisces about Manheim online. Last year, he excitedly announced his son’s role in ‘Tangled’ on Instagram.

Camryn commented on the photo, ‘Like father, like son!’ She added that he was handsome, charming, and kind, just like Flynn Rider.

In a 2021 Father’s Day post, Brezovar shared his personal story about becoming a father, recalling his teenage fears that his sexuality might prevent him from ever having children.

He reflected that a lot has changed since then, writing about how proud he is of his son, describing him as a kind and wonderful person who always makes him feel like a father. He also shared that his son’s mother is a great person, too.

This film beautifully captures what modern family life is like, but unfortunately, it’s received some negative attention online due to the current divisive atmosphere.

No studio has ridden the rollercoaster of the so-called ‘woke wars’ quite like Disney.

For years, many companies have been actively trying to showcase diversity and promote positive social messages in their advertising. However, these efforts have recently faced significant public criticism and negative attention.

Consider the upcoming 2025 Snow White movie – the $270 million live-action remake aimed to modernize the beloved fairytale.

The film features Rachel Zegler, a Latina actress famous for her role in West Side Story, and Disney promoted it as a groundbreaking achievement.

When Zegler called the classic 1937 movie ‘outdated’ and described her character’s love interest as ‘basically a stalker,’ it caused a huge reaction online.

Then came the dwarves who were reimagined as ‘magical companions’ instead of little people.

The intention behind the casting change was to avoid harmful stereotypes, but it actually upset advocates for people with dwarfism. Actor John Ferguson, for example, protested outside cinemas dressed as Grumpy from Snow White, carrying a sign that said: ‘Hire real dwarfs!’

The situation became more complicated when old social media posts by Zegler came to light, including a tweet supporting Palestinian rights and a post criticizing Donald Trump.

The movie quickly became a major source of controversy, and despite its high production cost, Snow White only earned $43 million during its opening weekend – a disappointing result.

According to a source who spoke with the Daily Mail last March, studios initially focused on demonstrating inclusivity, but are now primarily concerned with navigating the negative reaction that followed.

Disney’s pivot toward identity-driven storytelling has been a mixed bag at the box office.

The 2022 film Lightyear was prohibited in several countries due to a short scene featuring a kiss between an astronaut, Alisha Hawthorne, and her wife.

In the same year, Disney’s Strange World made history by including a gay teenager as a main character. However, despite positive reviews within the company celebrating its inclusive portrayal, the film was a major box office failure.

Critics accused the studio of ‘forcing an agenda.’ Fans countered that inclusion was long overdue.

And then came the Carano saga.

Disney fired “The Mandalorian” actor in 2021 after he made controversial posts online comparing contemporary conservatives to Jews who were persecuted during the Holocaust. This led to public anger, discussion, and ultimately, legal action.

In August 2025, Carano reached a settlement with Disney, expressing her hope that it would help everyone move forward and find peace, referencing the ‘Force’ as a symbol of that healing.

This episode made it clear that Disney is now at the center of Hollywood’s debates about free expression, who we are, and what we believe.

It’s against that backdrop that Manheim’s casting lands.

His personal history positions him as a modern Hollywood hero, though by 2026, his story wouldn’t be considered particularly shocking. It’s still uncertain if fans of ‘Tangled’ will connect with this image or simply ignore it.

Disney’s 2010 animated film, Tangled, featuring Mandy Moore as Rapunzel and Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider, was a huge success and remains one of their most popular movies in recent years.

As a huge fan, I was completely blown away when this movie came out! It earned over $592 million globally and really sparked a renewed love for classic Disney princess stories, but what shocked me most was the sheer scale of it – it was the most expensive animated film ever made at the time, costing a massive $260 million to produce!

The movie’s success led to a Disney Channel series, talk of a Broadway show, and a dedicated fanbase.

Disney is hoping its existing fans will help its new live-action film succeed, recapture the wonder of the original story, and repair recent issues with its audience.

Many viewers were already disappointed with the choice of Teagan Croft, 21, to star alongside Manheim, and they strongly criticized Disney for not casting Sabrina Carpenter as Rapunzel instead.

Manheim, for his part, seems unfazed.

He often speaks about his mother being a major source of strength and credits his family with inspiring him.

She’s raising her child on her own, and I grew up as an only child, spending my entire childhood with her,” he shared with People magazine in 2024. “Ultimately, we help each other grow and improve.”

Regardless of how well Tangled is received, it’s clear that Disney’s latest prince is openly sharing his personal experiences.

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for both Milo and Camryn Manheim for comment.
