The “Unhinged” Sci-Fi Horror Movie That’s “The Most Terrifying Depiction of Hell” Touches Down on New Streaming Home

Science fiction and horror have often blended together in fascinating ways for decades. Classic examples include films like It Came From Outer Space from the 1950s, and more recent hits such as Under the Skin, Annihilation, and The Substance. However, one movie stands out as arguably the most disturbingly original sci-fi horror film ever made, and it remains incredibly effective even nearly 30 years after it first came out.

Released in theaters on August 15, 1997, Event Horizon, directed by Paul Anderson, is widely considered a top-tier sci-fi horror film. It expertly combines the chilling cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft with psychological and religious themes, creating a truly unsettling experience. The film doesn’t shy away from darkness as it explores a terrifying question: what if attempts at faster-than-light travel inadvertently opened a gateway to Hell?

Released in the late 90s with a cast including Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan, and Joely Richardson, the movie Event Horizon wasn’t a commercial success. It earned only $42 million despite costing $60 million to make. However, over time, it’s gained a dedicated following, with fans praising its stylish visuals, unsettling atmosphere, and powerful acting. Here’s what the movie is about:

Event Horizon centers on a rescue team sent to investigate the return of an experimental spaceship that disappeared while testing a revolutionary faster-than-light drive. Once aboard the abandoned ship, they discover the drive may have created a gateway to a terrifying, unimaginable dimension. The crew is increasingly plagued by disturbing visions and psychological distress, and it becomes clear the ship is determined to subject them to the same horrifying fate as its original crew.

‘Event Horizon’ Is Getting a Sequel

Paramount Pictures

As a longtime fan of the cult sci-fi horror film Event Horizon, I know a lot of us have been hoping for a sequel for years. Well, we’re getting something – just not the movie we imagined! Instead of hitting theaters, the story continues as a comic book series called Event Horizon: Inferno, picking up 200 years after the original film. It’s written by Christian Ward and illustrated by Rob Carey, and IDW Publishing is releasing the first issue on February 4, 2026. While we don’t know how long the series will run, the previous comic run, Event Horizon: Dark Descent, was a solid 5-issue miniseries. Here’s what the new story is all about…

The starship Event Horizon vanished in 2040. When it reappeared seven years later, it was haunted by a powerful evil. After killing the team sent to investigate, the ship was destroyed, leaving only its front section, still desperately needing the gravity drive that allowed it to travel between dimensions. Now, two centuries later, a wealthy billionaire has arrived at the wreckage near Neptune with his own fleet of ships. Driven by rumors of the Event Horizon, he’s willing to risk the lives of his crew to unlock its hidden secrets.

Fans can soon watch the sci-fi horror film Event Horizon on Paramount+, starting January 1, 2026, while they wait for the sequel to come out.
