Emma Stone recently shared why she was initially hesitant to shave her head for her role in the new film, Bugonia. In the movie, Stone plays a company executive who is kidnapped because her captors believe she’s an alien with a mission to destroy the planet.
In the film, the characters shave the woman’s head because they think her hair is being used to contact an alien mothership. The scene was particularly stressful for the actress, as the filmmakers only had one attempt to get it right.
The actress remembered focusing on a single thought while filming: “Just stay still,” she told Entertainment Weekly. She explained that she was essentially meditating on remaining motionless.

Honestly, I was so fascinated hearing Stone talk about filming that scene! She said she was incredibly nervous about messing up the take, and because she was supposed to be unconscious, she basically just pretended to be dead – she said she just ‘played dead’ to avoid ruining it. It’s wild to think about how much goes into those moments!
“It was one take and there were four cameras set up just to make sure,” she added.
Yorgos Lanthimos, the director, commended Stone for being fully dedicated to the role, explaining that she readily agreed to shave her head without any hesitation.
He explained that the scene was already written in the script, so he didn’t need to discuss it with her. She’d read it beforehand, and he noticed a moment of nervousness – not about performing the scene, but a feeling of apprehension beforehand.
It actually worked! We managed to pull it off, and it was a one-time opportunity. Afterwards, she felt fantastic – she finally liked what she saw in herself and felt truly liberated.
Lanthimos couldn’t persuade her to keep the hairstyle, playfully explaining that she was tired of having to cover her head during filming for months.
The film Bugonia, a remake of the South Korean movie Save the Green Planet, has received positive reviews, originally earning a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes (it’s now at 90% fresh).
Critics generally agree the movie is wildly entertaining, using director Yorgos Lanthimos’ unique and clever style to explore the craziness of modern life.
Bugonia is released in cinemas on 31 October.
