As a long-time fan who has eagerly anticipated each new season of The Umbrella Academy, I must confess that my enthusiasm for the fourth installment has waned significantly. Having closely followed the lives and adventures of these unique superheroes since the series’ inception, I find myself deeply disappointed by the direction this final chapter took.
As a dedicated fan of The Umbrella Academy, I have eagerly awaited each new season since its debut. With my memories of the thrilling twists and captivating characters still fresh in my mind, I was excited to see how the fourth season would wrap up this unique superhero story. However, as someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema and television, I must say that the reception for the final season has left me feeling disappointed and disillusioned.
Viewers have criticized several inconsistencies, poor storytelling, and a specific subplot in which the character of Five (Aidan Gallagher) pursues a relationship with Lila (Ritu Arya), who is married to Five’s brother Diego (David Castañeda). “I can hardly express my dissatisfaction after watching the last season of The Umbrella Academy,” expressed one fan on Reddit, proposing an alternative ending. “But honestly, what was that?” Another fan succinctly stated, “Let’s pretend season 4 never happened.” A third speculated, “There must have been some sort of trickery going on…”
I’m almost positive AI wrote season 4. It literally feels like someone typed a vague explanation of the characters and story lines into something like ChatGPT and it pumped out a basic script and they just ran with it.
It feels like a punch to the face to the fan base and cast and crew of the show. Not only does the fan base want a better story to end out the series, but I feel like the cast and crew deserve one.
As a dedicated fan of the show, just like many others, I found myself utterly baffled and frustrated by the plot twist involving Diego and Five. Much like David Castañeda, I expressed my confusion to Us Weekly, “I just didn’t get it – I was furious,” I confessed. “I was annoyed. I had a few conversations with showrunner Steve Blackman, asking, ‘Is this really necessary?'”
As a dedicated fan, I found myself aligning with Lila’s viewpoint when Ritu Arya spoke up. It made perfect sense to me why her character might harbor feelings for Five. She wasn’t getting along with Diego, but he is the father of her children, and it seems like the well-being of their kids is what truly matters to her.
As a devoted fan, it’s clear that the unexpected turn of events in the storyline, or what we call the plot twist, didn’t sit well with many of us. And to be honest, the entire season felt a bit off for some reason. But hey, if you’re like me and can’t get enough of The Umbrella Academy, all four seasons are now available for streaming on Netflix!
