We discover that Five’s superior at the CIA is not who he believed, and we uncover what Sy has been doing all along.
WARNING: Major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 5 are below.
In the fourth-to-last episode of the season, we follow Five and Lila as they embark on a mission to prevent Ben from meeting Jennifer, which sets their journey across multiple timelines. However, they become disoriented and struggle to return home. Over six years of time-traveling together, they’ve grown incredibly close, forming a bond that may prove difficult to sever.
In the present storyline, Klaus struggles to escape from his coffin as Viktor and Reginald travel together. Upon arriving at the hotel where Ben and Jennifer previously stayed, Viktor and Reginald are taken aback. Reginald informs them that a strong earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the seismic scale, occurred and this location is the epicenter. They find an unsettling scene of dead birds in the parking lot and a devastated hotel. The concierge is found dead, and Reginald ominously announces that this is just the beginning of the purification process.
Ben won’t leave Jennifer
While on the move, Ben and Jennifer pull over at a gas station, where Ben proposes they get married spontaneously. One of Reginald’s associates identifies them, causing Ben to be taken aback. Suddenly, a call comes from the phone booth, which Ben picks up to find Viktor on the line. Viktor announces that the world will perish in 48 hours, but Reginald clarifies it’s now only 24 hours away. Viktor explains the concept of The Cleanse and warns him about a virus taking over his body. He advises Ben to steer clear of Jennifer, but Ben remains unmoved by the warning.
In the CIA headquarters, Diego and Luther are led to a room filled with staff members. Luther has his doubts that these individuals are former agents who didn’t make the cut, but instead, Diego thinks they might be part of a secret operation.
Lila and Five have been making do with rats for food in the train station below ground level, and despite the passage of six years, five months, and two days, they’re still unable to return home. Recently, Five remembered a stop that seemed agreeable enough for them to linger for a while. Lila remains hopeful but Five insists they need a respite, a place to sleep comfortably, and a chance to clean up. In the end, Lila consents, but emphasizes her determination to keep searching for a path back home.
In their search for Klaus, Allison and Claire locate the building where he was being detained by Quinn. Upon entering the structure, Allison discovers individuals using illicit substances within its halls. As she proceeds deeper into the building, she unexpectedly encounters Quinn who strikes her with a bat. In an attempt to employ her powers against him, she finds herself unable due to her weakened state.
Just as it’s all about to go wrong, Claire unexpectedly arrives and attempts to strike Quinn with a bat. This gives Allison the opportunity to rise and employ her powers against him at last. She pins Quinn against the wall and, in an eerie echo of his earlier question about her being a “ball buster,” causes his testicles to rupture. Demanding to know Klaus’ location, she receives some good fortune as he reveals it to her.
In a surprising turn of events, Diego engages in a deep conversation with a CIA agent, who confesses he’s been divorced numerous times and his children dislike him. He attributes this to his job and wishes for simple dinners with his kids from the past and reconciliation with his ex-wife. The agent also mentions they are part of the “file and pile group,” which saddens Diego. Trying to connect with Lila at home, he calls but, as expected, she’s not available.
Five and Lila find romance in another timeline
In a serene timeline, Five and Lila establish their home, enjoying strawberries and nurturing a garden of plants together. Despite some undercurrents of tension, they share their first passionate kiss. Their relationship deepens, and in another instance, we observe that Five crafts a bracelet for Lila as a token of his affection.
In search of additional necessities, a group of five people head towards the train station. To their surprise, one of them stumbles upon a notebook with his own handwriting at the station. This journal serves as their guide homeward. However, Lila follows suit later and he conceals the discovery, pretending that he found nothing.
On another floor at the CIA, Luther discretely searches through documents. However, Ribbons spots him and plans to escort him to Diego. But in the elevator ride, an unforeseen situation unfolds. As Ribbons attempts to touch Luther’s shoulder, he notices a tattoo of an umbrella, hinting that Luther belongs to The Keepers. More men join them in the elevator, leading to a brawl erupting between them. Luther manages to overpower his adversaries, resulting in most of their demise. He promptly makes his way to find Diego afterward.
The Keepers infiltrate the CIA
As Luther encounters Diego, it seems additional individuals appear, likely associates from The Keepers group. In an exciting sequence, Luther and Diego engage in combat with them, yet they find themselves at a disadvantage as their adversaries multiply. Eventually, they are compelled to retreat due to the overwhelming numbers against them.
Allison and Claire manage to extract Klaus once he smashes open the coffin. Simultaneously, Jennifer seems distressed during her journey with Ben, and a reddish glow becomes noticeable on her face.
In another reality, Lila unexpectedly presents Diego with a gift on their shared seven-year anniversary. Overwhelmed by guilt, he chooses to reveal an old journal to her, admitting that he’s held onto it for months. She expresses her frustration because he didn’t share it earlier and insists they should return. However, Diego is hesitant, fearing the return would mean going back to a damaged timeline. He warns Lila that she will be returning to a troubled marriage. This revelation enrages Lila, who claims their relationship has been more about surviving than thriving.
It’s the end for Lila and Five
As a gamer, I, Lila, share that I’ve got kids waiting for me off the grid. Five gets it, but he subtly nudges, “We don’t know what we’re returning to; everything might be wiped out.” Yet, there’s a glimmer of hope – we’ve got each other right now. However, with a mother’s heart, I’m compelled to rush home to my loved ones.
While driving together, Reginald and Viktor come across a pair of blazing cars blocking the road. They decide to investigate and soon find themselves under attack by armed individuals hiding in the woods, who start firing at them. In a desperate attempt to protect Reginald, Viktor pushes him into the car, takes a bullet, then employs his powers to neutralize as many of the assailants as possible. He subsequently moves one of the burning vehicles out of harm’s way and jumps behind the wheel, enabling them to escape, albeit with Viktor wounded. In their ensuing discussion, Reginald expresses his dismay over how harshly an alternate version of himself had treated him in the past.
Jennifer’s discomfort is escalating, causing Ben to pull over. He escorts her into a shabby department store instead, prompting one of the caretakers outside to contact someone, stating they’ve located them. Ben dials emergency services and locates Jennifer in a fitting room. Her skin feels feverish, and when he lies beside her to soothe her, his own face also becomes warm.
Abigail has been on her own mission this whole time
In the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant, Sy encounters Gene and fatally stabs him. As Gene breathes his last, Sy removes his face to unveil their hidden identity: it’s Abigail! Abigail then proceeds to harvest Gene’s organs for use in assuming his appearance as her new disguise. It seems that Abigail has been working independently all this time.
As ‘Gene’, I slip into the local eatery, but it doesn’t take long for Jean’s radar to pick up on something off about my actions. Her spouse appears oddly out of sorts. Suddenly, one of The Keepers declares they’ve tracked down Ben and Jennifer. Instantly, Jean and I signal them to broadcast a mysterious message – one that undoubtedly ties into the upcoming phase of the Cleanse. With so many intricate storylines unfolding in this season, this episode skillfully lays the groundwork for the climactic events we’ll see in the season 4 finale.
