The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 4 recap: “The Cleanse”

The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 4 recap: "The Cleanse"

As a seasoned fan of the time-traveling, superpowered saga that is The Umbrella Academy, I must say, this episode was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and suspenseful intrigue. The plotlines were as tangled as a squid’s tentacles (a nod to our beloved Jennifer) with each character grappling with their unique challenges.

In the fourth episode of The Umbrella Academy’s fourth season, the Hargreeves siblings are set to uncover the truth behind their missing brother Ben, as they’re locked into Reginald’s memory device. However, this isn’t the only revelation that surfaces in this episode. Upon understanding the true nature of The Cleanse, they come to understand that their current mission carries more significance than they initially perceived.

WARNING: Major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 4 are below.

In Reginald’s invention, Luther, Diego, Allison, and Viktor are time-traveled back to October 14, 2006 – the day their brother Ben passed away. They observe the young siblings preparing for the “Moldova mission” within their home. Reginald strictly warns them not to open a particular container they discover, and Pogo transports them in a futuristic-looking automobile to their location. Upon arrival, Ben ignores Reginald’s orders and unlocks the container, revealing Jennifer inside. He decides to save her, despite his siblings urging caution.

Luther contacts Reginald with news of a predicament, as meanwhile Ben takes hold of Jennifer’s hand to lead her away. Upon touching her, an unexpected surge of energy passes between them. Not long after, Reginald arrives on the scene and fires at both Ben and Jennifer, startling their siblings. Luther, Diego, Allison, and Viktor stir from their slumber, displaying understandable anger. With this newfound knowledge, they now comprehend that it was Reginald who ultimately took Ben’s life, albeit through a different iteration of himself, but with what appears to be justification for his actions.

The Cleanse explained

Reginald clarifies that Ben and Jennifer were on the verge of triggering a catastrophic chain reaction, potentially wiping out all life on Earth. Later, Abigail admits her guilt, acknowledging she inadvertently developed a dangerous element called marigold, along with an unintended byproduct known as durango. When these two elements interact, they will ultimately lead to the destruction of everything, a phenomenon she calls “The Cleanse.”

In Jennifer, there resides Durango, a fact that has led Reginald to maintain a significant distance between her and the Hargreeves siblings. However, this separation is no longer feasible since they have already come into contact. The scene then shifts to Ben and Jennifer in the woods, having successfully eluded Gene and Jean. Ben feels an unusual bond with Jennifer and suggests they remain together due to this connection.

Luther shares with everyone about Ben’s arm rash, causing his siblings to feel anxious. What should their next action be? After threatening to kill either Ben or Jennifer to save the world, Reginald brandishes a firearm, but his siblings object vehemently. They can’t let him take another life so easily. Allison manages to seize control by hurling a decorative item at Reginald, asserting that he no longer holds power over them.

In a fit of rage, Viktor’s abilities manifested, taking hold of Reginald. Viktor berated him, blaming him for all the chaos. Abigail intervened, finally calming Viktor down, allowing Reginald to regain his feet. One of his guards then reported that they had located Ben.

While Klaus is repaying Quinn’s debt, he functions as a medium. He encounters a woman whose spouse passed away, and he successfully summons him. The woman returns for another meeting, but this time she’s upset with her husband. She suspects that he hid some money and wants to know where it’s hidden. Through his abilities, Klaus assists her in finding the hidden cash.

At Jean and Gene’s place, I gather with my other siblings as we scrutinize the crime scene while CSI and their teams are on duty. Lila whispers to me a potential solution: revisiting the time travel train to prevent Jennifer and Ben from having that fateful first touch. I express skepticism, convinced it’s impractical without the suitcase. However, Lila is persistent, believing it’s worth trying. After some hesitation, I concede, but we’re unsure about what to do with Diego. Suddenly, he appears and asks for a private conversation with Lila.

Viktor has a plan

Diego queries Lila regarding her desire to step away from their marriage, to which she responds that although she continues to hold affection for him, his persistent grumbling and gloomy disposition create numerous difficulties in their lives and those of their children. Meanwhile, at the crime scene, Viktor informs Reginald that he might be able to rescue Ben.

As a loyal follower, I find myself at the scene of the crime when an agent from the CIA approaches Five. He subtly requests that they escort Luther and Diego back to their base, which I interpret as him asking for help to look after them since they seem to be causing some sort of inconvenience. Graciously, he agrees to this task.

Allison phones home intending to chat with Klaus, but finds herself concerned when Claire picks up instead. Later, at home, Claire confronts Allison directly, expressing that she believes Allison should work on resolving issues in her relationship with Klaus.

Later on, we find out what Jean and Gene are doing. They manage to acquire a fast food restaurant as part of The Keepers team, who then collaborate to search for Jennifer. A mysterious figure named Sy arrives, pretending to be a fan of the couple. But who is he truly? Is he working for Reginald or does he have personal agendas?

Ben and Jennifer open up

Ben and Jennifer are lodging at different rooms in a hotel, yet they communicate through the walls. Ben confesses he’s never experienced feelings like these before, but Jennifer suggests they should part ways separately. Ben is adrift, as if he has no other place to be. His biological family is absent, but Jennifer empathizes because her kin are also missing. Later, Jennifer shares her story with Ben about the squid. She explains that she was never claimed after being rescued from it, and presumably thrown overboard.

As a gamer immersed in an underwater world, I can’t help but feel that my tentacled character and the squid-loving NPC are destined for something more. Could it be that this is our predestined bond, or is it just a game of chance?

Five and Lila disembark at the train station, only to realize they’ve returned to what seems like their original timeframe once more. They teleport to the Hargreeves residence, landing on October 14, 2006. Their objective is to prevent Ben from embarking on a mission, but they encounter an unexpected twist when students from the Phoenix Academy greet them instead of their usual acquaintances. Realizing their mistake, they teleport back to the station and board another train.

Klaus’ semi-entertaining subplot

In any location where he’s been confined, Klaus manages to break free and makes his way to a cemetery in search of the woman’s secret money stash. He unearths the grave of her pet dog and discovers the hidden cash, but his actions have not gone unnoticed. The woman arrives at the scene with two armed companions, who then train their guns on Klaus. Before anything can escalate further, Quinn and his team burst onto the scene, aiming their weapons at the woman and her associates. A shootout ensues, and as the gunfire subsides, Klaus ducks into the grave for cover. Upon emerging from the grave, he’s shocked to find that everyone involved in the altercation is dead.

Essentially, almost everyone is alive, but there’s a twist: Quinn and Klaus are even in terms of money, and things escalate when Quinn hits Klaus, causing him to fall into a coffin. The coffin then closes, trapping Klaus inside, and Quinn proceeds to cover the coffin with dirt, effectively sealing it shut with Klaus trapped within.

Despite the complexities involved, his objective is to save _Ben’s_life, an action that leaves _Reginald_perplexed. He expresses a low opinion of humans as the “lesser species,” which prompts _Viktor_to call him a “rude individual.”

The Cleanse begins

On the train, Lila and Five find it continuing without a stop as an announcement over the speakers confirms it’s an express train passing through a distorted tunnel. Meanwhile, at the hotel, Jennifer taps on Ben’s door, and they engage in a deep, intense kiss. A burst of red energy emanates from them, scattering beyond, which triggers car alarms in the parking lot, shatters the hotel windows, and causes the hotel concierge to vomit dark liquid before succumbing to it.
