The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 3 recap: “The Squid and the Girl”
As a seasoned viewer of this captivating series, I find myself utterly intrigued by the latest developments. The Jennifer incident has certainly added another layer of mystery to the already convoluted narrative. It seems that our beloved characters are once again on the brink of uncovering hidden truths, and I can’t help but be reminded of a classic detective novel – albeit with superpowers thrown in for good measure.
Resuming after episode 2, season 4 of The Umbrella Academy delves a bit into Jennifer’s past, but leaves us with more mysteries than solutions. The Hargreeves visit Reginald in search of clarification, while Klaus deals with the challenges of regaining his powers. Here’s a recap of the major events from “The Squid and the Girl”!
WARNING: Major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 3 are below.
The third episode of season 4 begins with a news report about two fishermen who’ve reeled in a massive squid. During an interview, they discover something struggling within it. Upon slicing open the squid, they’re astounded to find a young girl trapped inside. When asked if she understands what transpired, all she replies is: “The Cleansing.” Spooky! A brief glimpse of Reginald can be seen in the backdrop. It’s revealed later in the episode that this girl could possibly be Jennifer.
After the events in New Grumpson, the siblings reunite, and Five and Lila reveal the truth about The Keepers. Klaus becomes extremely enraged at Allison for giving him the marigold, as he would rather have died than regain his powers. He departs from the group, while Ben observes his arm glowing. It appears that Jennifer may have bestowed some powers upon him when their hands touched during the crash. This theory seems plausible.
The brothers drive their vehicle to an auto repair shop, assuming that Jennifer might be one of them since Reginald constructed a fictional universe around her in New Grumpson. Ben sets off to locate Jennifer, while Lila clarifies the situation to Diego, who then discovers that the man she was with at the café was merely Five disguised. However, rather than feeling comforted, Diego becomes enraged at Lila for deceiving him.
Jennifer is being held by Gene and Jean
Later, the scene shifts to Jennifer, who finds herself in a strange bed wearing unfamiliar clothes. Enter Jean and Gene, who claim they’ve been searching for her extensively. They question Jennifer about the Cleanse, but she seems baffled by their queries. The duo informs Jennifer that the Hargreeves had ill intentions towards her, but they rescued her instead. However, it appears that Jennifer remains skeptical.
Diego, Lila, and Five venture to The Keepers’ headquarters for a covert exploration, seeking any clues that could aid them. Lila queries Five about his inability to blink, to which he replies that he is unsure of the cause. He transports them to the train station he unearthed in episode 2, explaining that whenever he attempts to blink, he finds himself here instead. Lila persuades Five to board the next train to discover its destination, while Diego uncovers documents related to The Cleanse within The Keepers’ trash.
I, a sneaky gamer, find myself at Allison’s place, digging up loot without permission. I grab as much cash as I can get my hands on, even dipping into Claire’s hidden stash. In a rush to snatch the TV off the wall, I didn’t notice Claire entering. She confronted me about what was going on, but I just shrugged it off, claiming it was too late and I needed to scram. With the TV in tow, I made a hasty exit.
Five is transported back to his apocalypse
Lila and Five step off the train and discover a devastated environment surrounding them – what was once The Keepers’ residence is now charred or ablaze. Recognizing this scene, Five understands that it marks his long-awaited catastrophe, the location where he spent 40 years confined, also known as the initial timeline. Suddenly, shots ring out from afar, and Five swiftly identifies the shooter as this timeline’s counterpart of himself. They hastily make their way to the subway station and jump back on the train, with Five able to teleport them back to the apartment using his power of blinking alongside Diego.
Diego shares with Lila and Five the documents he discovered, including one marked October 14, 2006 – the sad anniversary of when they lost Ben – as well as a reference to “the Jennifer situation.” Swiftly realizing that whatever transpired concerning Jennifer must be linked to Ben.
Regarding Ben, Sy locates him and inquires about his daughter. Ben clarifies the situation, confessing that he’s been preoccupied with thoughts of Jennifer. He seeks answers and acknowledges his doubts about being her true father. He discloses that she’s currently with Gene and Jean, which worries Sy as he fears for her safety. Suddenly, Ben experiences a severe headache, to which Sy attributes as Jennifer trying to reach out to him. Sy advises Ben to heed his body’s signals and suggests that he already possesses the tools necessary to find her. Ben’s face turns fiery red, mirroring Jennifer’s own flushing complexion in another scene.
The Jennifer incident
Jene and Gene reveal their artifacts to Jennifer, items they claim prove the existence of alternate realities. They explain to her that she holds the power to eliminate false realities and restore the correct one, though she’s puzzled by their words. They ask how they can aid her in the ‘Cleanse’, but she responds angrily, brandishing a knife as a threat. She labels them insane and attempts to flee, but Gene is armed with a gun. They subsequently display the giant squid, the same one from the start of the episode, which visibly frightens her.
In a surprising turn of events, Viktor, Luther, and Allison visit Reginald’s residence, where they encounter a friendly and welcoming bodyguard upon arrival. Upon entering, Reginald is absent, but Abigail warmly greets them, expressing her eagerness to meet them as she’s heard a lot about them. After some tense moments, Reginald appears, inquiring about the events that took place in New Grumpson. Agitated, Viktor rises and unleashes his powers, confirming Reginald’s suspicions that the siblings have reclaimed their abilities.
It appears Reginald asks more questions than his siblings, and he informs them that he’s been shielding Jennifer from them. As he explains, Jennifer possesses powers greater than all of the siblings combined. Unexpectedly, Diego, Five, and Lila arrive at the house and express the need to discuss Ben with him.
Klaus gets into trouble
In a narrow back-lane, Klaus hovers expectantly, awaiting the arrival of a man named Quinn. Upon arriving, Quinn informs Klaus that he needs to repay $40,000, a sum Klaus acknowledges he doesn’t possess. Trying to persuade Quinn to end his life by attacking him, Klaus even lands a punch on Quinn’s face in an attempt to provoke him. However, instead of responding with violence, Quinn shoots Klaus in the forehead. What follows leaves both men astonished as Klaus’s bullet wound miraculously heals in mere seconds. Following this bizarre incident, Klaus finds himself suspended upside-down in a strange cell, whereupon Quinn offers him a solution to repay his debt.
Diego handed over the discovered files to his brothers and sisters, who learned from Five that these documents detail the circumstances surrounding Ben’s demise, which is linked to an event known as “the Jennifer incident.” Luther admitted they were already aware of Ben’s passing, but upon attempting to clarify it, they collectively understood that their existing knowledge was unclear and devoid of meaning. They had been given a vague account that held no significance. Could it be Reginald or someone else tampering with their memories?
Reginald needs to restore some memories
Reginald explains that he can’t follow the conversation since the events took place in another timeframe, but he admits there’s a possibility it resembles something he might have done. He mentions his mind manipulation experiments and requests their assistance. The siblings request that Reginald restore their memories of Ben, and despite his reservations, Abigail convinces him to comply with their request.
Ben unexpectedly appears at Jean and Gene’s residence, slipping stealthily through their garden using his tentacles. He starts murdering anyone outside, including security personnel, a sight that Jean and Gene witness from a distance. Spotted, Ben hastens to locate Jennifer while gunfire erupts around them, prompting them to flee for safety.
At Reginald’s place, he connects Luther, Diego, Allison, and an additional individual named Viktor to one of his devices. Despite not being part of their mission, Viktor expresses his desire to join in. Just before the device starts operating, Lila confides in Diego that she wishes to momentarily pause their marriage. As the episode concludes, Reginald initiates the machine and the siblings start experiencing various visions and memories.
