The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 1 recap: "The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want"

As someone who’s been a fan of The Umbrella Academy since its inception, I must say that this latest episode was a rollercoaster ride of emotions! It feels like it’s been ages since we last saw Allison, and boy, do I miss her quick wit and sharp tongue.

To sum it up, the much-adored Netflix series, “The Umbrella Academy,” is once again gracing our screens! The fourth and final season has been released, with all six episodes ready for streaming right now. The opening episode, titled “The Unbearable Tragedy of Getting What You Want,” sets the stage as the Hargreeves family adjusts to their fresh realities following the timeline reset: they’ve lost their superpowers. If you recall, it was old man Reginald who reset everything at the end of season 3? Well, it seems like the siblings have come to terms with no longer being superheroes.

However, everything could shift dramatically in the upcoming season 4 of “The Umbrella Academy”! The first episode serves as a delightful refresher of what makes this Netflix Original so endearing to us.

WARNING: Major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4 episode 1 are below.

Six years have passed since the season 3 finale, and the new characters, Jean and Gene Thibedeau, portrayed by Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman, are crucial in this upcoming season. In the season 4 opener, we find them engaged in a euchre tournament, but their game is interrupted as they step outside to meet a man delivering an old New York City memorabilia-filled suitcase. The couple shows great enthusiasm upon discovering a VHS tape of the movie “Love on Loan 2,” featuring Allison Hargreeves. Intriguingly, they decide to kill the man so as to take the suitcase without having to pay him for it.

The siblings are setting into their new normal

As a dedicated fan, let me share with you a glimpse into the lives of the Hargreeves siblings over the past few years. Here’s my personal take:

According to the VHS tape showing Gene and Jean’s score, Allison is an actress, although her success isn’t particularly high at the moment. Instead of appearing in movies or television shows, she focuses on acting in commercials. Klaus resides with Allison and her daughter Claire, but Ray appears to be absent. It turns out that he abandoned them. Since then, Klaus has become extremely anxious, going as far as wrapping his possessions in bubble wrap and donning a helmet for car trips.

Introducing The Keepers

In a turn of events, Number Five, donning a disguise, attends a support group gathering. One participant mysteriously discusses Reginald and his actions. Under an assumed identity, Five narrates his experiences, claiming to have traversed multiple timelines and being old enough to be 63. This unexpected display of vulnerability catches everyone off guard, but it’s later unveiled that he’s secretly working for the CIA. A man seated beside him hints at showing him a genuine meeting, piquing his curiosity.

At the workplace, Five submits a report about a team known as “The Keepers” to his superior. These individuals exhibit characteristics reminiscent of cults, and they share the belief that everyone is trapped in the wrong time period. However, his supervisor displays little interest and instructs him to focus on other cases instead.

At Grace’s birthday party, Luther accompanies Ben who has a past linked to a questionable crypto exchange case. Klaus is persuaded by Allison to join the festivities against his will. The gathering presents various interactions such as Lila and Diego having a spat, Ben conversing with Five, and Diego attempting to persuade Five for a CIA job offer. Luther appears more cheerful this season, adding a pleasant touch. However, his siblings seem out of sorts. Diego expresses doubts about Lila’s whereabouts that morning and appears skeptical of her.

Lila locates Allison within the vehicle and persuades her to step indoors, an encounter that’s a bit uncomfortable due to their prolonged absence from each other. The siblings haven’t had contact with Allison for quite some time and are at a loss as to what to talk about. Diego confides in Luther about his dissatisfaction, but feels remorseful when Luther mentions that he and Sloan would have given anything for the lifestyle that Diego and Lila enjoy.

Viktor gets kidnapped

To everyone’s surprise, Viktor arrives at the party, but before he could enter, a man identified as David Cross intercepted him in the parking lot. This fellow informed Viktor that he needed to get into a van with him, causing Viktor to believe his father might be involved in this unexpected scenario. Suddenly, the man stuns Viktor with a taser and abducts him.

Following the party, disguised as Jerome, Five attends another gathering of Keepers, this time held at a private residence. Shockingly, he spots Lila among the guests, introducing herself as Nancy. In a confrontation, she reveals that her journey from an assassin to becoming a mother and wife has been challenging. During the meeting, Jean and Gene arrive to deliver a presentation, referring to the time anomaly as “The Umbrella Effect.” Their aim is to rectify the distorted timeline, displaying childhood photos of the Hargreeves siblings together with pictures of Reginald and Abigail.

Jean and Gene discuss an impending event, referred to as a “cleansing,” which they believe will return everyone to the proper sequence of events. They inform Four and Six, who are part of the audience, that they plan to deliver a talk about this topic in the near future.

Following the meeting, Lila and Five continue their discussion at a coffee shop, where Five confides that there might be some residual effects in Reginald’s reset. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Diego has been keeping tabs on Lila due to her suspicious actions, leading him to believe incorrectly that she could be involved romantically with Five.

The siblings follow an alarming letter

Luther escorts Ben back to their dilapidated former residence, and it’s in a shockingly poor state. When Luther gets a letter and summons his siblings, he becomes concerned. The letter indicates that Viktor has been abducted, providing instructions on how to locate him. The siblings promptly head to a nearby cleaner’s shop, where they find Viktor bound to a chair in a hidden room. The kidnapper emerges and requests their assistance. He presents them with a news article about the Umbrella Academy rescuing the Eiffel Tower, along with a picture of themselves, which leaves them puzzled as they can’t recall performing such an act.

The man tells them that he found a bunch of stuff like this in his daughter Jennifer’s car, and he thinks something terrible has happened to her. He explains that she’s part of The Keepers group and he needs help finding her. The siblings know that without their powers, they might not be any help, but Five tells the man that they’ll find her in 24 hours.

Their powers are coming back

The brothers and sisters step outside and confront Five about needing an answer, prompting him to retrieve a jar of glowing marigold from a container, a magical elixir that could restore their abilities. They head off for a meal together, pondering the crucial query: Is it really desirable to regain their powers? Unable to reach a consensus; Klaus votes against it while Ben advocates for it and attempts to persuade the group. In a democratic decision, however, they side with Klaus, leaving Ben to act independently. Consequently, he takes control of the situation himself.

In a stealthy manner, Ben sneakily samples the marigold drink before transferring it into shot glasses intended for his siblings. He persuades everyone to down their shots prior to departing, including Klaus who is currently sober; however, none of them are aware of the true contents they’ve just consumed. The scene concludes on a suspenseful note, implying that we’ll have to wait and see how the Hargreeves react once their powers are restored.
