With each new season, I eagerly anticipate the intricate narrative weaving, the captivating character development, and the heart-pounding suspense – but this? This was a curveball I wasn’t prepared for.
Fans of The Umbrella Academy are expressing strong emotions such as wanting to cry, shout, and feel sick, following the distressing depiction of significant age difference romances in the last season of the popular Netflix series.
Audience members were so taken aback by the unexpected romance on the show, they’ve gone as far as requesting a apology from its producer.
In this reimagined science fiction drama, featuring Elliot Page, we find a band of once-dispersed superheroes who come back together following the demise of their adopted father, Sir Reginald Hargreaves.
As a lifestyle expert looking back on the final season, I find myself reflecting on the Hargreaves siblings who, following a timeline reset, have been scattered apart. Stripped of their extraordinary abilities, they’ve been forced to rely solely on their human ingenuity to navigate life’s challenges. Yet, as fate would have it, one last time they must reunite to thwart an enigmatic force called The Keepers – a group shrouded in secrecy and intent on causing chaos.
During the fourth season, characters Five (portrayed by Aidan Gallagher at age 20) and Lila (played by Ritu Arya, aged 35), find themselves stuck in a seven-year cycle of temporal displacement while battling to return home.
Lila, married to Diego (David Castañeda), Five’s adoptive brother, finds herself drawn into a mysterious romance with someone she believes is just her travel companion, but it soon becomes clear that there’s more to him than meets the eye.
To start off, Five is thirteen when the initial series unfolds, however due to his ability to teleport, he gets trapped in a post-apocalyptic era far into the future for several decades instead.
After being reconnected with his loved ones, it turns out that despite appearing as a teenager (who is 18), he is actually 64 years old on the inside.
Nevertheless, viewers found themselves perplexed by the choice of casting the duo as romantic interests, given the puzzling age differences portrayed on screen.
Many viewers noted that Lila initiates a romantic involvement with Five, considering they initially met when he was still a child. Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that she is already part of his brother’s family.
As a devoted admirer, I must admit that when I first heard whispers of their relationship, it didn’t sit quite right with me. However, what truly turned my stomach was discovering they shared passionate kisses and intimate moments – scenes that were integral to their on-screen storyline. It left me feeling a bit… unsettled, to say the least.
As a lifestyle advisor, allow me to express my sentiments in a more palatable manner: “I find myself utterly baffled by the antics of Lila/Five lately. Their actions leave me feeling bewildered and frustrated – I’d go so far as to say it’s almost overwhelming. It’s as if I want to shed tears, retch, and let out a primal scream – all while wishing I could somehow erase the memory of what I’ve witnessed.”

As a devoted fan, I feel compelled to express my discomfort and say, “I believe an apology is due from the writers of The Umbrella Academy regarding the recent plot development involving Five and Lila. It’s left me squirming in my seat.”
On social media, numerous fans expressed their contentment with the idea of Five and Lila becoming best friends instead of romantic partners. They pointed out that Lila’s relationship with her husband was more appealing in earlier seasons.

The show’s creator Steve Blackman made the creative decision knowing it could divide fans.

Given that he is portrayed as a 64-year-old trapped in an 18-year-old’s body, it seemed fitting to include a love story. However, he pondered over how such a character, seemingly not inclined towards dating, could have a romance.
As a long-time fan and observer of Five’s journey, I believe that they needed companionship, regardless of gender. When Lila entered the picture, it seemed like a promising opportunity for them to form a connection. We tried our best to help facilitate this relationship, but ultimately, I am uncertain about how the fans will react. My personal experience has taught me that love is unpredictable and can take unexpected turns, so I hope that everyone remains open-minded and supportive of Five’s choices as they continue to navigate their life.
Steve emphasized that the couple should share a kiss due to their challenging dynamic, noting that they are polar opposites who harbor mutual disdain, yet surprisingly alike in many ways.
As a devoted admirer, I embarked on a journey with them for an astounding seven-and-a-half years to witness if anything magical would blossom. Indeed, it did! When they finally shared their first tender kiss, it was as sweet as the ripest fruit on a tree.
It’s quite possible that they ended up together. We made sure not to have them practice the kiss. Instead, we guided him until the moment before the kiss, and on the actual day, we allowed them to share the moment themselves, which turned out beautifully.
In spite of the surprise from the fresh romance, viewers found themselves deeply moved as television’s top-rated series began its grand finale on Thursday night.
