The Umbrella Academy fans left outraged by ‘HORRENDOUS’ final season and problematic romance – claiming Netflix show ‘cooked up a worse ending than Game of Thrones’
As a fan who has been following The Umbrella Academy since its inception, I must admit that the development of Five’s romantic storyline with Lila took me by surprise. Having grown accustomed to the show’s unique blend of humor, action, and intrigue, this unexpected twist added a layer of depth that I didn’t know I needed.
Supporters of the popular Netflix series “The Umbrella Academy” have been rendered ‘dumbstruck’ by the ‘poor’ fourth and final season. Some disgruntled viewers are so upset that they refuse to accept that it was broadcast at all.
The beloved series came to an end when the final batch of episodes dropped on August 8.
Although some viewers prefer to imagine that the show was terminated following its third season due to the writers providing an ending less satisfying than that of “Game of Thrones,” this is not factually accurate. The series has, in reality, continued beyond its third season.
The sci-fi drama series, starring Elliot Page, follows a group of disbanded superheroes who reunited after the death of their adoptive father Sir Reginald Hargreaves.
The final season sees the dysfunctional siblings separate after their timeline was reset.
Currently powerless, they must rely on their individual wits to endure, but ultimately unite once more to thwart an enigmatic organization called The Keepers.
Many viewers, having watched the episodes and discovered the tragic end that the siblings faced while selflessly restoring order in the timelines, took to social media platforms to express their disappointment about the way the show concluded.
One disgruntled viewer expressed, ‘The Umbrella Academy writers are devising an ending that’s even more disappointing than Game of Thrones.’
A user commented: ‘The Umbrella Academy was dreadful; I found it to be the worst season yet, and an abysmal series finale – I’d give it a zero out of ten.’ (paraphrased)

As a devoted fan of exceptional television shows, I must admit that I was left utterly disappointed by the ending of Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy. Having followed this series since its debut, I have grown accustomed to intricate storylines and satisfying conclusions. However, this final season has left me scratching my head more than ever before, leaving me with a feeling that it may have finally surpassed the level of confusion that Game of Thrones reached in its final seasons. As someone who has invested countless hours into dissecting plotlines and character arcs, I can confidently say that this finale was far from satisfying and left me craving more coherence and resolution.
One aspect that bothered some viewers was the sudden romantic relationship between the character Five (portrayed by 20-year-old Aidan Gallagher) and Lila (played by Ritu Arya, aged 35), who were stuck in a seven-year time loop while attempting to return home, which added an unexpected twist to their struggles.
Lila, who’s married and has kids with Diego, Five’s adoptive brother (played by David Castañeda), found herself in a romantic involvement with her travel partner, a 64-year-old individual trapped within the form of an 18-year-old.
Spectators swiftly noted that Lila initiates a romantic involvement with Five, considering they initially crossed paths when he was still a child. Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that she is already part of his brother’s family.
One horrified fan wrote: ‘b***h I was so excited for the umbrella academy but what the actual f**k do you mean FIVE and LILA KISS??!!!??’
Another stated: ‘I just… can’t with that Lila/ Five stuff. I really can’t – why are they doing that. I wanna cry and throw up and scream and unsee that.’
‘Five and Lila are in love and I feel a little nauseous,’ one viewer lamented.
The show’s creator Steve Blackman made the creative decision knowing it could divide fans.
To Netflix, he expressed: ‘I believed it was essential for Five to have a romantic tale. Given that he’s an elderly man trapped in a young man’s body, we considered introducing a romantic subplot. But I pondered, “How could he possibly have a love story? He doesn’t seem like the type who would date”.’
Based on my personal experiences and interactions with people, I believe that everyone needs companionship, regardless of their gender. In one particular instance, we had a chance with Lila, who seemed like a potential match for Five. We decided to give it a shot, but I must admit, the outcome remains uncertain. As for how the fans will react, only time will tell. However, I’ve learned that true fans understand and support the complexities of characters’ lives, as they are not just one-dimensional figures on a screen.
Steve mentioned that he felt it significant for them to share a kiss due to their challenging relationship dynamics. He noted that they were complete opposites who harbored mutual disdain, yet they exhibited striking similarities as well.
For nearly eight years, I was with them, watching to see if anything would develop. To my delight, it certainly did. By the time they shared their first kiss, they had become incredibly endearing, according to him.
It’s quite possible that they ended up together. We made sure not to give them a chance to practice the kiss during rehearsals. Instead, we guided him to the moment right before the kiss, and then on the actual day, we allowed them to share the kiss spontaneously, which turned out beautifully.
Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that not all cast members were in favor of the storyline involving the Five and Lila. In an interview with US Weekly, Dan Castañeda (who plays Diego) expressed his disapproval: ‘I didn’t get it. I was furious.’
