The Umbrella Academy boss explains why Sloane was absent from season 4

As a long-time fan of The Umbrella Academy, I must say that the fourth season, despite its brevity, managed to wrap up the series quite satisfactorily – if not a little abruptly. The love story between Luther and Sloane, though unfulfilled, was a tantalizing hint of what could have been a captivating subplot.

Recently, the fourth season finale of “The Umbrella Academy” was released on Netflix, and although some viewers might have issues with its conclusion, I’m pleased that this peculiar series about a troubled group of superhero siblings managed to wrap up on its own merit.

In simpler terms, while The Umbrella Academy managed to wrap up its narrative, the final season had fewer episodes than normal, only six instead of ten. This led to some storylines being trimmed or merged together. For instance, Luther (Tom Hopper) developed a romantic interest in Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), a member of the Sparrow Academy, an alternate universe version of The Umbrella Academy’s members. Characters on this show often grapple with such complex situations.

Essentially, Luther and Sloane got married, but then the third season took a twist with a universe-wide reset, causing all Umbrella Academy members to be reborn without their powers in different places. Given this turn of events, it’s not surprising that Sloane isn’t featured, yet it feels strange that she is neither mentioned nor seen, considering Luther still recalls her.

It turns out, Steve Blackman, the showrunner, didn’t get a chance to explore the storyline he had intended for this season involving Luther and Sloane. He expressed that his original plan was for Sloane to be alive but not remembering Luther, with him trying to win her affection again. However, due to practical reasons, they couldn’t manage to execute it as planned.

Indeed, that tricky logistic hurdle has tripped up numerous promising narrative turns. Tom Hopper admitted that the finale of that specific story arc seemed somewhat unfinished, prompting him to wonder, “Whatever became of her?”

If Gerard Way, the creator of The Umbrella Academy comic books, decides to continue the story in print, we might find out what happens next. Although the Netflix series has concluded, the comic book version of The Umbrella Academy carries on, so there’s always a chance for more developments down the line.
