The true story of Song Sung Blue really is as wild as it is in the new movie

The moving film Song Sung Blue shares the real-life love story of Mike and Claire Sardina, featuring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson (who received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance). The movie follows the couple as they fall in love and build a career performing Neil Diamond’s songs for audiences around Milwaukee during the 1990s.

But that’s not the whole picture. If you’ve seen the movie, you know the Sardinas family had a life full of both incredible happiness and heartbreaking sadness – events so unbelievable, they almost seem made up.

Keep reading to discover the actual events – the real story of the Sardinas is just as wild, if not wilder, than the version you’ve seen.

The Song Sung Blue true story

The film is inspired by a real-life couple, Mike and Claire, who performed as Lightning & Thunder. It’s based on a 2008 documentary called Song Sung Blue, which you can currently find on YouTube. The director, Greg Kohs, met them unexpectedly and felt their story would make a compelling film.

He spent eight years documenting their lives with his camera, capturing both intimate personal moments and significant events, including their performances.

I first stumbled upon Lightning & Thunder way back in the early ’90s while I was making a documentary for Harley-Davidson. I’ll never forget seeing them – they were playing on top of this little outdoor bar at the Wisconsin State Fair, absolutely nailing Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’! The crowd was all leather and denim, and everyone was having a blast. It seriously gave me goosebumps, and I knew right then I had to share their music with the world. It was just an incredible moment.

Craig Brewer, the writer and director, used the documentary about the Sardinas family as inspiration for his 2025 film. Hugh Jackman stars as Mike Sardina, a man recovering from alcoholism, and Kate Hudson plays his wife, Claire, who used to perform as a tribute artist for Patsy Cline before their marriage.

The film starts by showing how the couple first connected and created their popular Neil Diamond tribute act, highlighting their deep love for each other. It doesn’t gloss over the challenges, though, portraying Mike as someone who could be difficult – both at home, where he often wandered around in his underwear and frequently yelled and smoked – and professionally. He stubbornly insisted on beginning their performances with Neil Diamond’s lesser-known 1970 song, ‘Soolaimón,’ even though audiences would have preferred to hear hits like ‘Sweet Caroline,’ ‘Song Sung Blue,’ or ‘America’.

You know, as a gamer, I totally get what the creator, Brewer, was saying to Entertainment Weekly. It’s like, a lot of stories start with this amazing, epic romance – all the fireworks and awesome music. But real love? That’s when you decide to build a life together, share a home, and actually live with someone. That’s the good stuff, the part that feels truly real.

As life unfolds, challenges and disappointments inevitably arise. The initial optimism and perfect vision we had often start to fade, and cracks begin to appear in what once seemed like a flawless plan.

Did Mike and Claire actually sing with Pearl Jam?

In the film, a couple gets an exciting call from Eddie Vedder, the frontman of Pearl Jam, offering them the chance to open for the band at a concert in Milwaukee.

That’s mostly accurate. In 1995, Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam played a headlining set at Summerfest, and Eddie happened to catch Lightning & Thunder perform earlier that day.

According to Summerfest organiser Bob Babisch, Eddie Vedder was casually walking around the festival with a baseball cap when he came across Lightning & Thunder performing on the mid-gate stage. He enjoyed their set so much that he immediately asked his tour manager to arrange for them to open for his show that night. His tour manager and agent then contacted festival organisers to make it happen.

Okay, so I was totally blown away by Claire and Mike’s show! They played for over 20,000 people, and just like in the movie, Eddie Vedder came out to sing ‘Forever in Blue Jeans’ with them. It was amazing! But the really funny thing is, the movie leaves out that Eddie actually forgotten the lyrics! He had to read them off a piece of paper – you can even see it if you watch the documentary. It’s a hilarious little detail!

Did Claire’s accident really happen?

A particularly shocking moment in the film occurs when Claire, while gardening at the Sardina residence, is struck by a car that swerves off the road, pinning her against the house.

Like in the film, Claire actually lost her leg in an accident in 1996. She also struggled with depression and became reliant on medication to cope with the pain she felt in her missing leg. This led to a period in the hospital, during which Mike cared for her two children from a previous relationship and tried to continue performing on stage without her.

The movie doesn’t fully capture how difficult things became for the couple. In a 2008 documentary, Claire revealed she thought about getting a divorce because she felt insecure about her appearance. Meanwhile, Mike upset fans by constantly mentioning Claire’s accident during performances and often breaking down in tears while on stage.

Was there a second crash in the same spot?

In the movie, another car crashes into the same part of the house, just barely missing Claire – and this actually happened in real life, four years after the first accident.

“It’s unbelievable that lightning struck twice,” Mike said to news reporters, as shown in a clip from the documentary.

Did Mike die after a performance, on the way to meet the real Neil Diamond?

The film builds to a powerful finale with a fantastic performance by Lightning & Thunder. However, earlier, we see Mike suffer a heart attack and conceal a head injury with glue, keeping it secret from everyone before his performance. He battles chest pains leading up to the show and tragically dies in a car accident while waiting to meet his idol, Neil Diamond, after the concert.

The true story of Mike’s death differs a bit from what’s been reported. While working on his documentary, director Greg Kohs received a phone call from Claire.

Kohs explained that she received a call informing her Lightning was in a coma and in critical condition. She immediately flew to Milwaukee, joining Thunder and her children at the hospital. They were almost finished editing the film, preparing to submit it to festivals when she got the news. But she quickly understood the film wasn’t complete and they would need to film one more scene.

Mike had a history of heart problems and had undergone quintuple bypass surgery. In July 2006, after a concert and a fall that resulted in a head injury, he developed a severe headache while traveling in a car. He was hospitalized, and sadly passed away a few days later at the age of 55, with his wife, Claire, at his side.

So, I heard this amazing story about a woman named Claire. Her husband, Mike, was a huge music fan, and after he passed away, Eddie Vedder actually sent Claire a letter and a guitar – seriously cool! But the best part? Two years later, Claire finally got to fulfill Mike’s biggest dream. Neil Diamond was playing a show in Milwaukee, and she got a backstage pass to meet him! It was like Mike was there with her, and it totally made my day just hearing about it.

I was so touched reading about my sister, Claire, and my brother’s dedication to meeting Diamond! They spent years trying to make it happen – reaching out to his team, going to all his concerts, and even trying to sneak backstage. They’d hang around the tour bus hoping for a chance encounter. My sister always felt like Diamond knew they were there, that he’d heard about them, and it was just so sweet to read that. It really showed how much they admired him.

I was so moved by Claire’s story – after seeing the documentary, Neil Diamond actually invited her and her whole family to be his guests at one of his concerts! Claire told Neil that her husband had been a huge fan his entire life, and that he would have been absolutely over the moon to be there. Her brother said it was a moment her husband truly lived for, and I can only imagine how special it must have been for everyone.
