The Traitors finale review: Tears, ruthless deception and edge-of-your-seat drama in the best series yet

It felt right that a show about lies and manipulation was won by such a cunning and strategic player. She could have easily betrayed her ally at the very end if it had served her, but ultimately didn’t.

Rachel Duffy, a 43-year-old communications manager from Newry, Northern Ireland, successfully played the role of a traitor from the very beginning of the game.

Everyone was wondering if she would betray Stephen Libby, another person who had already turned against others, in the final showdown.

She vowed to support him and share any treasure they found if they survived, but could someone so skilled at deception actually be believed?

Oh my god, you guys, I was watching everything, and poor Stephen, he was a mess! Seriously, he was all flushed, practically vibrating, and looked absolutely terrified that Rachel was going to just… completely throw him to the wolves. It was awful, but I couldn’t look away!

For the last month, the woman skillfully blended in with the show’s long-time participants, befriending them and successfully portraying herself as a trustworthy person.

Despite facing accusations, she remained calm and took ruthless action, eliminating her enemies and falsely implicating others.

Last night, she had the opportunity to eliminate Stephen and win the entire £95,750 prize for herself, but she proved she wasn’t ruthless and remained loyal to him instead.

The Traitors finale was a thrilling 85 minutes filled with suspense, making it one of the most intense endings the show has ever seen.

When the fourth series began earlier this month, I wasn’t the only one to be concerned.

Alan Carr’s win on the celebrity version of the show created such a buzz that it seemed unlikely the regular version, airing just two months later, could be as captivating.

The show had a rough beginning. Producers tried to spice things up with a confusing “secret traitor” twist, but it didn’t add anything meaningful and was quickly removed.

The show also has a strange focus on the personal connections between contestants – like mothers and daughters, or couples – but these relationships don’t actually impact the competition, and viewers aren’t particularly interested in them either.

Things didn’t become interesting until two self-absorbed individuals were eliminated. Hugo Lodge, a lawyer, and Fiona Hughes, a government employee, both failed because they acted as if the story revolved around them, creating unnecessary drama and ultimately leading to their downfall.

After the obstacles were removed, everything began to improve rapidly, leading to an exciting championship finale.

Thursday’s episode ended with Rachel and gardener James Baker facing possible elimination. Their fate would be determined by a risky game of chance involving two boxes – only one of which held a shield that would keep them safe.

When the round began, Rachel chose the box with the shield, allowing her to continue playing, while unfortunately, James was eliminated.

‘I’m on the ropes but I’m not going down without a fight,’ said Rachel last night.

The final five contestants were Jack Butler, a personal trainer; Faraaz Noor, an auditor; Jade Scott, a PhD student; and Rachel and Stephen, who were also competing.

The last round of the competition resulted in Jade’s elimination, and she was heartbroken, crying as her friend Stephen was the one who voted her off at Ardross Castle.

The final stage of the competition left the last four players questioning whether they could trust one another. Ultimately, they didn’t, and Faraaz, who had remained loyal throughout, was eliminated.

Only Rachel, Stephen, and Jack remained by the firepit. Jack and Stephen hadn’t really stood out during the show until recently.

Although Jack kept talking about ‘manifesting’ a win, it wouldn’t have felt very satisfying if he had. He hadn’t really stood out as a contestant until recently.

Rachel and Stephen winning is likely to be controversial. While some viewers supported the more traditional couple, it’s fair to say they weren’t a very strong match.

It was both annoying and funny to listen to them repeatedly ask why the ‘traitors’ were letting them stay in the game, completely missing the obvious reason: they just weren’t very good and posed no real challenge.

Stephen is known for his incredible style, but he needed Rachel’s help to succeed. Because of her, he’s now sharing in the prize money and is likely to become a makeover stylist on the TV show This Morning.

Meanwhile, everyone is impressed with Rachel, who recently revealed she received FBI training before the show. She says this training prepared her to identify and eliminate anyone who might be working against the group.

Her competitors didn’t realize she’d gained the ability to easily deceive them. They underestimated her and didn’t recognize her new skills.
