The tragedy of The Wolverine
As a lifelong Marvel enthusiast who’s spent countless hours immersed in the intricate tapestry of the X-Men universe, I can confidently say that Wolverine is one of the most compelling characters to grace the pages (and screens) of comic book history. His journey from feral mutant to selfless hero is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the indomitable will that lies within us all.
“I am the best at what I do, bub. And what I do isn’t very nice”.
One memorable phrase from Wolverine encapsulates his persona and values, serving as a defining quote for this character.
Born in the late 1800s, James Howlett Logan, also known as Wolverine in Marvel Comics, has led a nomadic life, traveling the world in search of family and a permanent home. The appearance of his bone claws signaled the start of a tumultuous journey filled with loss, as he walked a path strewn with the remains – friends, enemies, and loved ones alike. As a mutant, his extraordinary healing ability ensures a long life, which may explain his rough exterior, strategic acumen, and specialized skill set. Among his notable abilities are heightened senses, superhuman physical prowess, and an indestructible adamantium-reinforced skeleton.
Hugh Jackman’s outstanding portrayal of Logan, a role he played over 24 years, has deeply resonated with audiences, making the character an enduring part of popular culture. This journey started in the movie ‘X-Men’, released by 20th Century Fox, and continued as Jackman reprised his role for eight more films within that series. Ultimately, he made a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Wolverine’.
During this span, Jackman’s character, Logan, has grown up in parallel with the audience, transforming from a wild fighter and nomad into someone willing to give up his life to safeguard and honor the legacy of his mentor, Charles Xavier. Even in his most fragile and broken condition, he tenaciously held onto the ideals that Xavier thought he could realize.
Logan’s tragedies have followed him into film
The 2017 movie “Logan” offers a moving portrayal of Logan, whose healing powers have diminished dramatically due to adamantium toxicity, causing him physical and emotional pain. His eyesight is blurred, and he finds it difficult to fully unsheath his claws. To cope with his distress, he turns to heavy drinking. In this state, he yearns to purchase a Sunseeker yacht and spend his remaining days at sea alongside a fading Charles Xavier. The appearance of Laura gives him a chance to rise above being just a beast or an aged, broken man, forcing him to confront the ghosts of his past, symbolized by X-24. In a noble gesture, he sacrifices himself, enabling Laura – X-23 to have a regular life, free from the torments of their shared past.
In the storyline of Deadpool and Wolverine, Wade Wilson embarks on a journey seeking a new anchor being, which brings him into contact with a worn-down version of Logan. While specifics about his history are scarce, it’s suggested that this Wolverine, similar to the one portrayed in Logan, evolved from a tavern brawler to an X-Man. However, he never fully disclosed his feelings or integrated well into team dynamics. In a touching dialogue with Laura, he confesses his apprehension about expressing deep emotions towards his fellow heroes, leading to unfortunate outcomes. Upon discovering the destruction of his kin at human hands, his berserker fury erupted, resulting in a destructive rampage that harmed the X-Men’s reputation. As a way of making amends and remembering his past, he consistently wears his blue and yellow suit under his attire.
In this tale, Logan finds a chance for redemption. Joining forces with the Anarchy Avengers, he faces off against Cassandra Nova and her soldiers, making peace with his former misdeeds, and affirming his role as “the X-Man.” He shows remarkable selflessness, prepared to give up his life to protect Wade and save his universe, having found his heroic motivation once more and realizing that he has nothing left to hold onto. In the end, through the combined efforts of Deadpool, Wolverine, and Madonna, they successfully preserve Wade’s timeline, giving Logan an unexpectedly satisfying ending – a worthy conclusion to his story.
The story ends with an event similar to the Fast and Furious movies, where Deadpool’s loved ones gather together, including a peaceful Logan and his daughter Laura. Both Logan and his character often believe they are destined for solitude, but people like Wade or Charles show them that belonging to a larger group, however temporary, is more meaningful than living in isolation and rejection.
