Breaking Dad: Britain’s Unlikeliest Drug Dealer

The startling story of a British father and coin dealer turned drug dealer

Year: 2024

Certificate: 15

Watch now on Prime Video

“Mistakes are part of life for everyone. But since I was having a good time, was it really a mistake?” Following experiences in stockbroking and real estate, Richard Lubbock established a successful career in the coin industry alongside his father, who had a complicated relationship with him. After his father’s passing, Richard began to delve deeper into his hidden identity as a gay man.

In the end, this situation affected his marriage deeply. When Richard revealed his emotions to his wife, an unexpected truth came to light – she identified as a lesbian. Subsequently, during his time in South Africa’s party scene, Richard began experimenting with the drug trade, dealing drugs much like he handled coins.

According to the book penned by James Lubbock, Richard’s son and a collaborator on this documentary, these two episodes offer an astonishingly candid look into a life and an unconventional journey into criminal activities. At one point, James reflects, “My dad has always enjoyed striking deals, be it through coins or the supermarket.” Unfortunately, this penchant for deals extended to drugs as well. (Two episodes)

The Fall: Skydive Murder Plot

Detectives investigate after a skydiver survives a parachute malfunction

Year: 2024

Certificate: 12

Watch now on Channel 4

I’ve come across some unforgettable stories in my time, but Victoria Cilliers’ tale stands out as one that truly defies the odds. In 2015, she found herself in a harrowing situation when her parachute and reserve refused to deploy during a jump from an astonishing height of 4,000 feet. Miraculously, she survived the fall. But life had more twists in store for this brave woman.

In this three-part documentary, you’ll find common elements such as interviews with law enforcement officers, archived footage, and dramatized reenactments. However, it’s the last one that makes this production stand out. MyAnna Buring, from “The Responder,” portrays Victoria in an innovative and moving way. The first episode concludes with the actual Victoria making her most detailed appearance and providing a profound interview on the entire series of disturbing events.

In an uncommon turn of events for a true-crime series, the victim in this story experiences a positive outcome. She not only survived her husband’s lethal plan but also managed to break free from his controlling influence, though it was a longer process than one might assume (spanning over three episodes).

As an obsessed fan, I’ve binge-watched countless happy dance videos on TikTok that brighten up my day with their infectious energy and charm. But lately, a darker thought has been gnawing at me – is there more to this popular and profitable world of entertainment than meets the eye? This three-part documentary series sheds light on the alarming practices used by a notorious Los Angeles management company, which reportedly manipulates and controls the dancers under its wing. As a fan, it’s both fascinating and disturbing to delve deeper into this complex web of cult-like tactics that hide in plain sight within the TikTok community.

At the heart of the storyline, we find the chilling tale of the Wilking sisters, Miranda and Melanie, whose long-held dream was to achieve success in dance. Yet, after joining 7M, the company led by Robert Shinn, Miranda was gradually persuaded to distance herself from her sister and family. She came to depend solely on Shinn and his church for guidance and support.

The Wilkings, as depicted in interviews along with individuals who successfully broke free from 7M’s control, present a chilling account of both psychological manipulation and actual harm to their wellbeing, including financial exploitation. (Three episodes)

The Plymouth Shootings

The tragic 2021 massacre in Devon – and what caused it

Year: 2024

Watch now on BBC iPlayer

Mass shootings and gun violence are commonly linked to the United States, yet unfortunate incidents do occur in other countries as well. A chilling example took place in Plymouth, Britain, in 2021, when a 22-year-old man named Jake Davison tragically ended the lives of five individuals. Amongst the victims were a young three-year-old girl and her father, two bystanders, and his own mother. This incident marked the most severe mass shooting in Britain since the 2010 tragedy in Cumbria.

After the devastating tragedy in Plymouth, I couldn’t help but wonder about the man behind the atrocities. His digital trail revealed a deep-rooted obsession with the Incel community, a subculture where young men lament their inability to connect romantically or sexually with women. Their resentment towards sexually active individuals, both men and women, often boiled over into hostility.

In this 45-minute documentary, we delve into the specific part of Davison’s life that is under investigation. We also aim to shed light on the series of events that led an unstable young man to perpetrate a mass shooting and gain access to a firearm.

When HBO’s acclaimed true-crime documentary “The Jinx” concluded in 2015, it left other documentaries in its wake with an unmatched finale – a seemingly confessional moment from Robert Durst: “What in the world have I done? I killed them all, you know that.”

As an obsessed fan, I couldn’t believe my eyes when the latest evidence in the series pointed to the renewal of the LAPD investigation into my dear friend Susan Berman’s murder in 2000. The anticipation was palpable, and just as I was eagerly awaiting the final episode, Robert Durst was arrested right before it aired!

As an obsessed fan, I’d put it like this: “For me, that period is where this captivating sequel unfolds. I’ve seen my fair share of criminals as a prosecutor, but there’s a particular mental picture I have of a killer. And it’s not Bob. LA Deputy District Attorney John Lewin, one of the key figures in this intriguing series, shares my sentiment.”

Upon hitting play, you become aware of the vast amount of captivating information yet to unfold. For instance, in one episode, the FBI’s discovery is described as follows: “Upon entering the room, they found an abundance of illegal substances, money, a fully loaded weapon, and a detailed map of Cuba. There was also a costly latex mask.” (Paraphrased from six episodes)

Contrary to this tranquil facade, Spencer’s existence for the past two decades had been a horrifying reality for Richard. Richard found a tiny way to assert control over his distressing circumstances by covertly filming the mistreatment with concealed cameras. Supporters of the regrettably canceled Netflix thriller series “Mindhunter” will be captivated by this three-part documentary. The main character, Dr. Ann Burgess, served as a significant source of inspiration for the show’s fictional character Wendy Carr (portrayed by Anna Torv). Not only did she significantly influence the FBI’s methods for profiling serial killers in the mid-1970s, but she also paved the way for change in how women were perceived and treated within law enforcement.

In intriguing three-part documentaries, Burgess, a former nurse turned FBI profiler, shares her captivating experiences. She recounts her journeys to American prisons for enlightening interviews with notorious killers like Ed Kemper and Ted Bundy. Armed with recordings of their chilling conversations, she applied this unique insight into both the criminals and their victims to effectively solve new cases within the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit.

Star creator Dick Wolf, known for his Law & Order franchise, began his career crafting fictional murder stories. However, he’s now exploring real-life crime cases as well. My Son Jeffrey: The Dahmer Family Tapes

Conversations between the killer and his father, Lionel

Year: 2023

Certificate: 18

Watch now on Paramount+

A common assumption is that serial killers are usually solitary individuals with no family ties, making their heinous acts appear less incomprehensible. However, documentaries like this one challenge this notion.

As a true crime enthusiast who has spent countless hours delving into the darkest corners of human behavior, I find the upcoming four-part series based on previously unreleased conversations between Jeffrey Dahmer and his father, Lionel, to be an intriguing addition to the genre. Having followed various cases and read numerous accounts of serial killers, I am always drawn to new information that sheds light on the complexities of their minds. This series promises to offer a unique perspective into one of the most infamous cases in American history. It’s fascinating to think about how these conversations might have influenced Dahmer or provided insight into his motivations. As someone who is always eager for a deeper understanding of such intriguing subjects, I can’t wait to see what this series reveals.

Expanding on the narrative are talks with Mike Kukral, a former schoolmate of Dahmer’s. He recalls Dahmer’s early love for books: “He was an introverted child… He had a strong affinity for fantasy literature, among other genres… He would cling to his paperbacks and read them intently, bringing them close to his face.”

Mike remembers that Jeff had a strong interest in dissection during biology classes. Outside of school, while fishing, Jeff would carefully open the caught fish to satisfy his curiosity about its inner workings.

These details offer valuable perspectives, yet it is the depiction of his complicated familial relationships that proves most enlightening, particularly how the father and son discuss it in maturity. Admittedly, not an uplifting watch, but undeniably insightful and gripping in a somber way (spanning four episodes).

Stalking: State Of Fear

Powerful call to arms to make Britain safer for victims of stalking

Year: 2024

Certificate: 12

Last year in 2021, a man who had been stalking his 23-year-old colleague Gracie Spinks for several months took her life in a tragic turn of events. This individual, previously known to law enforcement due to Gracie’s prior reports, later ended his own life as well. Regrettably, Gracie was not the only woman he had targeted with harassment.

I can’t help but be deeply troubled by this one-off film that exposes the flaws in our law enforcement system and the broader justice system. As an obsessed fan of justice and equality, I feel a strong connection to Gracie’s story, and my heart goes out to her and her devastated parents. The film reveals that approximately two million women are living in constant fear of stalking and harassment – this is unacceptable. Something needs to change, and I join the chorus of voices calling for urgent reforms. Alongside Gracie’s story, we hear from other women who have experienced similar harrowing ordeals, and their stories only reinforce the need for action.

The scene is disturbing with numerous instances of police and Criminal Prosecution Service blunders. One such mistake led to a offender being unintentionally provided with the home address of a woman he had previously been convicted of stalking. Let’s cross our fingers that those in positions of authority are paying close attention.

However, shock turned to horror during the funeral preparations in Sweden when it was noticed that Annie’s autopsy report did not mention the extensive bruising found on her body. Moreover, over 80cm of her long hair was mysteriously missing.

As a seasoned investigative journalist with years of experience delving into the most intriguing and complex cases, I can’t help but be skeptical about the story put forward by the Scottish police regarding Annie’s death.
