The Time Glen Powell’s Chad Powers Co-Creator Said People Would Think The Premise Is ‘A Piece Of S–t,’ And Why He Was OK With That

Last summer, Glen Powell appeared poised to become a major movie star. His romantic comedy, *Anyone but You*, was a rare box office success, *Hit Man* performed well on streaming platforms, and *Twisters* further solidified his status as a rising Hollywood leading man. Everyone wondered what he’d do next, so when he announced a streaming series called *Chad Powers* with a comedic and somewhat unusual concept, many people doubted it would work. But according to one of the show’s creators, that skepticism was actually part of what made the project so appealing.

In a recent interview with GQ, Logan Paul discussed his rising popularity in Hollywood and his new project, *Chad Powers*. The show has a unique concept: a struggling former college athlete goes undercover, disguised, to try out for another college football team. Trailers for *Chad Powers* have even likened the show to the movie *Mrs. Doubtfire*.

Initially, this concept appeared flawed, and according to co-creator Michael Waldron, that’s the reaction they received from studios when they first presented it. He responded by saying:

I think that this is probably going to be a piece of shit.

I can see why people initially reacted negatively. Similar movies, like *Mrs. Doubtfire*, only work because of a star’s charisma – Robin Williams, in that case – and even then, it’s a bit unusual. With this project, a big part of the appeal is Glen Powell himself, so having him hidden behind a disguise for most of the show is a challenge. It definitely sounds strange and could be a big risk. Honestly, it’s surprising it even got scheduled for release in 2025.

Instead of discouraging Waldron and Powell, negative feedback actually fueled their work on the show and felt like a good sign. Given the show’s unusual concept – inspired by a viral 2022 ESPN sketch with Eli Manning – they were encouraged by their ability to develop a relatable story from it, seeing it as proof of their creative and storytelling skills. As Waldron explained to the publication:

I think that was actually a strength of the show. It was fascinating to see how they could possibly make it interesting.

Given how much faith there is in this project, I’m really excited to see the show. Powell has consistently chosen interesting projects with talented creators, and his upcoming film, Edgar Wright’s *Running Man*, continues that trend. He’s also starring in J.J. Abrams’ next big movie, proving he’s a highly sought-after actor. The fact that he’s dedicating himself to a show with such a quirky concept suggests *Chad Powers* is going to be something truly exceptional.

You’ll be able to watch *Chad Powers* with a Hulu subscription starting September 30th, 2025. Also, don’t miss Glen Powell in *Running Man*, which comes out in theaters on November 7th and is expected to be one of the biggest movie releases of 2025.
