Chris Columbus, responsible for directing ‘The Thursday Murder Club‘, shares insights into the design choices he made for the appearance of Coopers Chase.
As a seasoned gamer, I can’t wait to dive into the thrilling world of the upcoming Netflix film! This cinematic adventure is inspired by Richard Osman’s 2020 novel and follows four retirees who, much like us gamers on a quest, transform their love for solving mysteries into an intriguing local murder investigation.
After the unveiling of the film’s preview, the public reaction towards the choice of Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan, and Celia Imrie has generally been favorable. However, there have been some criticisms concerning the appearance of the home where their characters reside.

As a devoted admirer putting words into Columbus’s mouth, I’d say, “Columbus, my esteemed collaborator with Jennifer Todd, made it clear in a statement that the concept of Cooper’s Chase, as envisioned by Osman, breaks away from traditional representations of retirement homes. He expressed concern that these depictions often feel ‘unwelcoming’ and ‘dreary’, a stark contrast to what he aims to create with Cooper’s Chase.
In simpler terms, Columbus envisioned Coopers Chase as a retirement community that embodies people’s dreams – a place where one might think, “I wish to spend the final decades of my life here.” Coopers Chase is full of life, colorful, warm, and welcoming.

According to Osman’s account, the layout of Coopers Chase featured a grand house positioned beneath a church and graveyard. This particular arrangement played a significant role in the narrative, as he explained.
In an almost surreal twist of fate during our venue hunt on the second day, I stumbled upon Englefield House in Berkshire – a breathtaking mansion with its very own church and graveyard nestled beneath its grandeur.
For the entire movie, this design could prove effective. We might opt to capture the given location naturally, eschewing computer-generated imagery altogether. In essence, Cooper’s Chase was portrayed as a film character-a captivating presence that extends beyond the screen, grabs your hand, and invites you into its magical realm,” he concluded.

The director, known for films like “Home Alone” and “Mrs. Doubtfire,” previously characterized the murder mystery as an engaging journey full of humor and tension, hinting that viewers might find themselves dabbing their eyes due to the emotional moments.
Alongside those previously mentioned characters, the intriguing series, “The Thursday Murder Club,” features an impressive ensemble of talented actors, including David Tennant, Daniel Mays, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Tom Ellis, who all take on important roles in the story.
The Thursday Murder Club will be screened in select theaters starting on August 22, and will become available on Netflix on August 28.
