The teetotal celebrities who have made a fortune selling alcohol despite honing in on a clean-living lifestyle

It’s ironic that many celebrities who publicly stopped drinking are now making money from alcohol brands.

Okay, I’m totally obsessed with Blake Lively and Drew Barrymore, so it kills me to see this! I always thought they were all about healthy living, but apparently, everyone’s cashing in on alcohol these days – even they are launching their own booze brands! It’s a little disappointing, honestly, but hey, good for them, I guess?

People who don’t drink but are profiting from selling alcohol might start losing customers if they’re not seen as genuine.

Some sources say companies might face difficulties due to a trend called ‘deinfluencing.’ It involves Gen Z users pushing back against excessive consumerism by only recommending products they see as authentic and honestly marketed.

According to Andy Barr, CEO of PR firm 10 Yetis Digital, brands perceived as inauthentic or misleading are facing increased criticism due to the growing ‘deinfluencer’ trend.

Blake, Drew, Jennifer Lopez, and Cara Delevingne have all earned millions through a business decision that sparked controversy.

Blake Lively

In 2023, Blake Lively, known for her role in Gossip Girl, surprised many people when she launched Betty Buzz, a line of alcoholic beverages, considering she doesn’t drink alcohol herself.

The 38-year-old actress posted photos on Instagram showcasing her new line of drinks, revealing them by lifting the lids off the containers.

‘Drinking isn’t my thing. But for f*** sake, flavor is,’ captioned the It Ends With Us star.

She said the drinks were so high-quality – she specifically used the word ‘clean’ to describe them – that it made her decide to move forward with this opportunity.

I’m a huge fan of her approach – she’s all about making things from scratch with genuine ingredients, like actual fruit! And she doesn’t mess around with anything artificial or low-quality – just good booze and real food. Honestly, the best part is it saves me so much time in the kitchen, which is exactly why I started following her in the first place.

In April, the On The Floor singer claimed she doesn’t ‘drink or smoke or have caffeine.’

In 2018, Lively claimed to be ‘an amazing mixologist’ despite not drinking.

She told PEOPLE that she does not ‘like the effects of alcohol’ and that she feels better sober.

She explained that when she didn’t drink, it could feel isolating. She wasn’t sure if it was just her perception, but she felt less connected to others.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I was so excited to see Betty Buzz hit the scene in 2021 with their fantastic sparkling mixers! And then, Blake Lively expanded the brand’s offerings – launching Betty Booze with a line of convenient and delicious canned cocktails. It’s a perfect evolution for anyone who loves a good drink!

She then launched a sister mocktail range in 2024.

Reports suggest Blake’s Betty Booze business lost $161 million last year, allegedly due to a negative campaign started by Justin Baldoni, the director and co-star of her film, It Ends With Us.

Blake Brown, her beauty company, reportedly lost $49 million, and her drink business, Betty Buzz/Betty Booze, has decreased in value by $22 million, according to her legal team.

Daily Mail contacted representatives for Blake at the time.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez, 56, known for her healthy lifestyle, recently released her own alcoholic beverage, Delola, which surprised many people because she had previously said she never drank alcohol.

After initially announcing she didn’t drink, Jennifer clarified her statement. She admitted that while she had gone without alcohol for a long period, she now occasionally enjoys a drink, but always in moderation.

People immediately noticed Jennifer was married to Ben Affleck, who had previously gone to rehab and gotten sober, and many wondered if it was a good look for his wife to be starting an alcohol company.

Later that year, Jennifer faced criticism for a promotional video that many found uncomfortable. This came after she had previously stated she didn’t drink alcohol, especially considering her husband Ben was committed to staying sober.

Jennifer’s team stated that Ben knew about and approved of her work with the cocktail brand.

Fans were puzzled by her recent comments about alcohol, where she explained she likes to have a drink now and then, but doesn’t drink to excess.

In a recent video, she responded to criticism about starting her alcohol line, Delola, even though she’s stated before that she doesn’t drink alcohol herself.

I’ve heard people wondering why I was holding a cocktail, since I used to not drink at all. And they’re right – for a long time, I didn’t drink anything.

Looking at photos of me from the last decade or so, you’ll notice I’ve enjoyed a drink now and then.

Okay, so she admitted she loves a cocktail, and honestly, same! But she made it very clear she’s not one of those people who drinks to get totally wasted. It’s all about being social, having fun, and just unwinding a little – but always in a sensible way, which, good for her! I need to remember that level of self-control. It’s just…so relatable, you know?

Drew Barrymore

Another star who cashed in on booze before going sober is actress Drew Barrymore.

Drew Barrymore started her wine brand, Barrymore Wine, in 2010, working with California distributor Wilson Daniels.

Drew, now 50, has been sober for five years, determined to stop the pattern of alcohol abuse within her family.

Looking back on 2024, I was so moved by Drew’s openness about getting sober. She shared that staying alcohol-free is honestly one of her proudest achievements, and it was incredibly inspiring to hear. It really resonated with me and so many others, I think.

She told People that quitting alcohol feels like a way to redeem the Barrymore family name, given their history of indulging in pleasure and excess.

The actress explained that she decided to stop something because it wasn’t a good fit for her family, saying, ‘It just didn’t work for us.’

I’m determined to end this pattern, hoping it will create a better future for my children and grandchildren.

Drew’s family has a long history of struggles with alcohol.

Drew Barrymore came from a family with a history of substance abuse. Her father, actor John Drew Barrymore, struggled with alcoholism, and her aunt, actress Diana Barrymore, openly discussed her own drug and alcohol use in her autobiography. Tragically, her grandfather, John Barrymore, a celebrated Shakespearean actor from the 1920s and 30s, died from the effects of long-term alcohol abuse.

Cara Delevingne

Model and actress Cara Delevingne, age 33, has teamed up with her sisters to create a Prosecco company called Della Vite.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d describe this brand as really focusing on the power of women supporting women – celebrating female friendships and sisterhood – all while being committed to sustainability. It’s about feeling good, doing good, and connecting with others who share those values.

Cara has openly discussed her difficulties with alcohol, sharing with Vogue that finding a 12-step program was incredibly helpful and that she learned to embrace seeking help without shame.

Cara shared in 2024 that getting sober has helped her regain control of her life. She explained that after years of struggling with drugs and alcohol, she had become deeply depressed.

The model has publicly battled addiction, and two years ago, unflattering photos surfaced of her looking unwell outside an airport in Los Angeles after a music festival.

She shared in an interview that now that she’s sober, she feels free from outside influences and is comfortable being around people who are drinking.

She confessed that she first experienced getting drunk at her aunt’s wedding in 2001, when she was only eight years old. She recalled the incident, saying, ‘I actually got drunk that day. Being eight years old, that was pretty wild!’

Cara, who also created the non-alcoholic Prosecco brand Della Vite Zero, recently shared with The Times about her decision to get sober. She explained that she once believed drugs and alcohol helped her deal with things, but now realizes they actually made her feel sad and deeply depressed.

‘I feel like I’ve got my power back and I’m not being controlled by other things.’

She explained the photos taken outside the airport – where she looked disoriented and wasn’t wearing shoes – by saying it was a mistake to go straight from a festival to work. She admitted she should have taken a day off, but added that the photos were bound to surface anyway, as there were already plenty of pictures of her looking tired.

She believes seeing those images was crucial to her decision to enter rehab and get sober, and she credits her recovery with ultimately helping her land the role of Sally Bowles in the West End’s Cabaret.

Cara clarified that being around others who are drinking doesn’t affect her, and she had just as much fun at Glastonbury this year, she just chose to go to bed earlier.

As someone who made the decision to stop drinking back in 2022, and now I’m thrilled to share my non-alcoholic wine with you all, I have to admit I had a funny expectation at first. I genuinely thought that when I went out and didn’t drink, I’d wake up feeling amazing. It sounds simple, right? But it took a bit of getting used to!

She was surprised to wake up with a terrible headache the next day, which she realized was caused by drinking sugary sodas.

When I first stopped drinking almost two years ago, I expected my social life to slow down. But actually, I ended up going out even more – which is fantastic, except that sugary drinks are everywhere when you’re socializing, and they really add up, she told The Sun.
