The Survivors Ending: Shocking Twist Revealed!
According to Jane Harper’s 2020 novel, the newly released Netflix series The Survivors centers around a man named Kieran Elliott (played by Charlie Vickers), who comes back to his hometown of Evelyn Bay, a small coastal community in Tasmania. Fifteen years earlier, a tragic accident occurred in the town that many believe Kieran was responsible for. Now a family man himself, Kieran’s return triggers a murder mystery that may stir up old secrets that had been forgotten.
As a passionate movie-goer, delving into the gripping tale that unfolds in this series, I find myself immediately immersed in the turmoil that enveloped Evelyn Bay upon the mysterious murder of Bronte (portrayed by Shannon Berry). Unlike many residents of Evelyn Bay, Bronte wasn’t originally from there. Instead, she was a tourist with an insatiable curiosity for true crime, who had made Evelyn Bay her temporary home for quite some time, seeking answers about the disappearance of Gabby, the third individual who vanished on that fateful day 15 years ago. Despite the discovery of Toby and Finn’s (Kieran’s brother) bodies, Gabby’s remains have yet to be found.
Multiple individuals are under suspicion for Bronte’s murder, among them is Brian Garvey, Kieran’s father. Despite his advanced dementia, Brian has emerged as a key suspect following the discovery of his DNA on Bronte’s clothing and inside her mouth. However, it appears there may be discrepancies, given that Brian seems physically incapable of committing such an act in his current state. Fortunately, the final episode of The Survivors sheds light on the series’ most significant enigmas: the facts surrounding Gabby’s disappearance and Bronte’s murder.
What happened to Gabby?
It became somewhat clearer whereabouts Gabby had been when Kieran’s girlfriend Mia (Yerin Ha) found a photo of her on a boat before she went missing. The image showed Gabby in a swimsuit drinking beer with Toby and Finn on the same boat, but Gabby was only 14 years old while Toby and Finn were adults, which raises questions about what happened to Gabby and whether Toby and Finn died as heroes or if they had a hidden secret.
In the final scene, Mia stumbles upon an additional photo at George’s residence (played by Don Hany), who had been using his darkroom for Bronte to process her pictures. The image depicts a rock etched with Gabby’s name and a date that is somewhat illegible. It’s common practice for those who have navigated the dangerous caves nearby to carve their names into rocks, and if Mia and her team can discern the exact date, it could potentially clear Finn and Toby’s names.
Kieran brings along Sean (Thom Green), his friend and brother to Toby, to assist him. They arrive at the rock, only to find that the engraving has been erased. It appears someone else knew Gabby had written her name there, trying to hide their involvement. Simultaneously, Kieran’s mom, Verity (Robyn Malcolm), visits Sean and Toby’s dad Julian (Martin Sacks). She’s shocked to learn that Gabby was aboard Toby and Finn’s vessel, leading her to suspect they may have made some poor decisions while raising their kids. Angry, Julian insists that Gabby never sailed with Finn and Toby. Overwhelmed by his confidence, Verity wonders how Julian could be so certain of this.
It turns out that the one who crossed out Gabby’s name on the rocks was Sean. Since he was the one who used the boat to take Gabby to the caves, she wasn’t with Toby and Finn in the boat. Gabby was searching for Kieran, whom she had a crush on, and Sean promised to lead her to him. However, things went awry when Sean tried to kiss her, but she wasn’t interested. This made Sean angry, causing him to leave her in the caves. Since she didn’t know the way out and couldn’t rely on Sean to help her, she tragically drowned there. Sean confided in his father Julian about what happened, and Julian suggested that Sean hide the truth, explaining why Julian was certain Gabby wasn’t with two adult men. With one son already lost in another cave incident, Julian was desperate to avoid losing another son as well.
Who killed Bronte?
Kieran is taken aback by Sean’s revelation deep within the caves. He advises Sean to inform Trish (Catherine McClements), as she’s been relentlessly pursuing the truth regarding her daughter Gabby’s disappearance since she went missing. However, Sean resists. At this point, Kieran comes to understand that the flashlight Sean is holding was previously borrowed by Bronte from Sean on the night of Bronte’s death. Earlier that evening, Bronte had asked Sean if she could join him at the beach, as there was an occurrence of bioluminescence she wished to witness. However, Bronte didn’t want to go alone due to being stalked. (The final episode verifies that the man watching her was George, who was cautious with his relationships with women following complications in Melbourne.)
In a nutshell, Sean accompanied Bronte, and together they discussed Bronte’s hypothesis concerning Gabby, with Bronte suggesting that Gabby might have been at the caves. This notion set Sean off, causing him to yell angrily at her. The novel “The Survivors” implies that Sean harbored incel tendencies, as he perceived Bronte’s disdain and felt insignificant. Throughout his life, he had been ridiculed and ignored by others. Unfortunately, this aspect of the story is only briefly touched upon, but it offers insight into Sean’s mistreatment of both Gabby and Bronte. Desperate to escape from Sean, Bronte cried out for help, but he assaulted her, striking first a punch and then hitting her with the flashlight, resulting in her death. He subsequently dragged her corpse out to sea and fled, but Brian discovered the body during his evening stroll, attempting to revive her using CPR. This ultimately led to Brian being initially suspected for the murder.
Overwhelmed with fear that the truth behind Gabby and Bronte’s murder might surface, Sean squares off against Kieran in the caverns, oblivious to the fact that the authorities have been alerted and are hot on their trail. As the confrontation unfolds, Kieran takes control and begins to choke Sean, but hesitates; he’s not a murderer. In response, Sean lands a hard punch on Kieran’s face, and then the screen goes black in “The Survivors”. Later on, the police manage to intervene effectively, apprehending Sean and safeguarding Kieran.
The story concludes with a tribute for Bronte and Gabby. After a 15-year long wait, Trish finds the opportunity to achieve closure. Both Trish and Bronte’s families may now start the healing process, although their lives will forever be altered. Maybe this closure will allow the residents of Evelyn Bay to progress anew.
