The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a surprising and delightful sequel that many Nintendo fans wouldn’t have predicted ten years ago. Now that it’s here, audiences are loving this new adventure with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad. Its success also sparks an important question: what does this mean for Nintendo’s future in film, particularly for a potential Super Smash Bros. movie?
Super Smash Bros. is a hugely popular fighting game featuring famous characters from Nintendo and other video game franchises, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Snake from Metal Gear Solid. Although fans have long hoped for a Super Mario Galaxy movie, a recent Easter egg in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie unfortunately suggests that may not happen.
Nintendo Fans Have Been Clamoring For a Super Smash Bros. Movie
When the Marvel Cinematic Universe launched with Iron Man in 2008, it quickly established a pattern of teasing future movies with post-credit scenes, specifically hinting at The Avengers. This idea of a connected universe has become standard practice, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie followed suit. When Princess Peach alluded to the existence of multiple galaxies, it strongly suggested the possibility of sequels or spin-offs, a feeling that was confirmed by the announcement of a follow-up film.
The Super Smash Bros. series is a standout fighting game franchise, celebrated for its creative level design and the way each character’s moves pay tribute to their history in gaming. Remarkably, even the older titles, like Super Smash Bros. Melee, remained popular in competitive tournaments for many years after they first came out.
Fans really love the series, and seeing familiar characters like Pikmin and R.O.B. helps audiences accept the idea of adventures beyond the Mario universe. Even more importantly, it builds excitement for the possibility of a crossover event.
Despite these strengths, a challenge lies in the relatively simple storylines of these games. The latest installment has the most compelling narrative, focusing on the villain Galeem capturing the heroes and Kirby’s quest to rescue them. However, since Kirby hasn’t appeared in the movie universe yet, adapting this story is tricky. Additionally, the filmmakers haven’t introduced enough characters yet to fully build out a Super Smash Bros. style world. Nevertheless, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie offers a promising glimpse of what a Super Smash Bros. movie could feel like, delivering a genuinely enjoyable experience.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Gives Fans an Amazing Easter Egg
In the exciting climax of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Mario, Yoshi, and Luigi face off against Dry Bowser and Bowser Jr. to save the galaxy. Just when things look bleak, Luigi grabs Bowser Jr.’s paintbrush and cleverly creates Mr. Game & Watch, a character inspired by the classic games. The resulting fight between Mr. Game & Watch and Dry Bowser is both funny and visually stunning.
The scene quickly changes to resemble a battle from Super Smash Bros., showing the character repeatedly surprising Dry Bowser, just like how challenging he can be in the game. This is a clever nod to Super Smash Bros. fans, capturing the game’s feel without dragging on for too long.
The movie includes several playful references to the games, like a challenging obstacle course reminiscent of Super Mario Maker, which cleverly leads into the entertaining scene with Mr. Game & Watch. While this Easter egg feels like a tease rather than a full exploration, it’s sure to leave fans eager for more. Ultimately, it provides a glimpse of what a Super Smash Bros. movie could be, giving filmmakers time to refine the concept as audience expectations change.
It’s Smart to Save a Super Smash Bros. Movie For When the Time is Right
I recently read an interview with Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto over at Polygon, and it gave me a really interesting perspective on how Nintendo approaches its movie universe. Basically, he said they’re focusing on organically integrating characters into the world, rather than forcing connections just to set up big team-up fights. It sounds like they’re prioritizing a natural expansion of the universe with surprise appearances where they fit, instead of trying to cram everyone into one movie – which, let’s be real, would never really work anyway. It’s a smart approach, and honestly, it feels like it’ll be better for the projects in the long run.
It’s disappointing that we don’t see more Nintendo characters interacting, as it would be really exciting. However, focusing on creating a lively and engaging world is better than constantly rushing towards the next big crossover event. That’s why characters like Fox McCloud fit so well in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – he had a meaningful part to play, and now audiences are eager to see more of him. This approach prioritizes building strong, lasting franchises instead of just creating temporary events.
Considering how many characters Miyamoto has designed, it’s wonderful to see favorites like Fox return. More importantly, this approach—similar to what happened with The Legend of Zelda—suggests that expanding these other game universes will be prioritized well before any Super Smash Bros. movie is made.
Finding an Easter egg in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was a fun surprise, but asking for more from characters like Fox, or expecting a bigger, more action-packed story, might actually be detrimental going forward. If the movie successfully showed audiences that enjoying the experience itself is more important than demanding a specific outcome or sequel bait, then it really succeeded.
