This new prequel series goes back to the 1950s and will be a dark, gritty murder mystery, showing how Vought International first began – trading the show’s usual political commentary for a classic noir feel.

The new season revolves around a team-up between two of the show’s most infamous villains. Jensen Ackles is back as Soldier Boy, but this version, from the 1950s, seems surprisingly hopeful and genuine as he embraces a classic, patriotic look. He joins forces with Aya Cash’s character, Clara Vought—the wife of a Nazi scientist who eventually transforms into the superhero “Liberty,” years before she’s known as the villainous Stormfront. The trailer suggests a dangerous situation is brewing as they both navigate Vought’s beginnings and the violent results of their goals.

The upcoming prequel, according to creator Eric Kripke, will depict a gritty and realistic version of mid-20th century America. The show will delve into the seedier side of the 1950s – think heroin dens and underground clubs – blending the dark humor of The Boys with a classic noir conspiracy. We’ll also see the disturbing beginnings of the super-soldier experiments at Sage Grove Center, where scientists were first developing the Compound V serum.

Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Karl Urban are joined by a large group of actors playing the original manufactured superheroes. Mason Dye returns as Bombsight, with Elizabeth Posey as the nurse-themed hero Private Angel, and Will Hochman as Torpedo. KiKi Layne, Jorden Myrie, Nicolo Pasetti, Ricky Staffieri, and Brian J. Smith also star, playing characters whose roles haven’t been revealed yet.
