The latest episode of Hacks season five is now streaming in the UK. This episode features Christopher Briney, known from The Summer I Turned Pretty and Mean Girls, as a new romantic interest for Deborah Vance (played by Jean Smart).
In this episode, Briney plays Nico Hayes, a pop star performing a long-term engagement at the Palmetto Casino – the same venue where Deborah used to perform.
He asks her out, but she responds by calling the paparazzi, not realizing he genuinely likes her.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the episode—which you can watch on Sky and NOW in the UK—actor Briney shared the story of how he was cast.

Briney explained the cameo happened quickly. He was already doing interviews for a different project when he received a very last-minute Zoom audition, which he took.

He explained that he barely made it home before the event began. He quickly cleared his desk, joined the Zoom call, and pretended he could sing. He said it was a lot of fun.
They were really understanding when they learned I wasn’t a singer. But honestly, being in what’s considered one of the greatest comedies ever made is amazing.
When asked if he’d been pressured into performing and if he was eager to take part, Briney simply replied, “Absolutely. It was a real pleasure to be involved.”
Regardless of awards, this show is widely considered one of the best of its time, and definitely among the most outstanding comedies of the last twenty years.

I was really excited by their innovative and humorous work, and I was determined to find a way to participate, even if it meant learning new skills.
During the interview, Briney shared that he found his character hilarious, saying he actually laughed out loud when he initially read the script.
He immediately recognized the quality of the writing, saying, “This is what makes it good – it’s genuinely funny and well-written.”
Nico clearly puts up a guarded front, but it’s easy to see he’s a young person who had to become independent and mature much earlier than he should have.
Hacks season 5 premieres on 17 April on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a beautiful 100-page, full-colour tribute to Sir David Attenborough, is now available! You can purchase it at newsstands or online.
