Back in 2016, I found myself captivated by “The Suicide Squad,” a movie that still lingers in my mind. One question that has intrigued fans ever since is the enigma behind Viola Davis’ character, Amanda Waller, sending Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr. to certain doom within the film. Recently, director James Gunn, who’s now steering the DCU, has shed light on this mystery by disclosing an amusing scene that unfortunately didn’t make it into “The Suicide Squad.
James Gunn on The Suicide Squad’s deleted scene with Rick Flag and Amanda Waller
During the most recent installment of the Peacemaker: The Official Podcast hosted by James Gunn, he revealed an omitted scene from The Suicide Squad which provided insight into why Amanda Waller tasked Rick Flag Jr. with such a dangerous mission.
In the beginning of the 2021 movie, Kinnaman’s character assembles a team, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and sets off for Corto Maltese island. Unfortunately, it is later revealed that this group was merely a ruse, leading to the tragic loss of almost every team member.
Steve Agee, a co-host of the DC podcast, initially shed light on a specific comedic scene. He commented, “There’s a funny bit where he seems puzzled, ‘I can’t figure out why I ended up with you lot,’ and then we see him making fun of Amanda Waller earlier.” David Gunn then jumped into the conversation and mentioned that the deleted scene from The Suicide Squad, which is still considered an extra, has not been removed yet.
In conversation with Joel Kinnaman on the podcast, the DC Studios co-CEO recalled a moment from their time together when Waller walked in wearing an unappealing flowery shirt. He quipped, “Waller, why that shirt? It looks like it was soiled by jesters.
After observing how intimidating Viola Davis becomes as Amanda Waller, Gunn affirmed that Kinnaman’s character, Rick Flag Jr., who mockingly referred to the A.R.G.U.S. director, was the reason she had him sent to his death. Gunn ended his narration by proudly stating that this story has now been officially acknowledged as true.
