If you’re a fan of The Strangers, you’ll want to watch it on Netflix soon! The movie that started the horror series is leaving the streaming service on January 1st, so you only have a few days left to stream it.
Bryan Bertino wrote and directed this thriller about a couple, Kristen and James, struggling after James proposed and Kristen said no. Their attempt to reconnect at a remote cabin is shattered when three masked strangers suddenly appear, turning their weekend into a terrifying fight for survival.
When The Strangers came out in theaters, it was a big commercial success, earning over $82.4 million despite costing only $9 million to make. However, critics weren’t as impressed. The film currently has a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 167 reviews, and audiences give it a slightly lower 48% score, averaging over 250,000 ratings.
Johannes Roberts directed the 2018 film The Strangers: Prey at Night, which revived the terrifying trio of Dollface, Pin-Up Girl, and the Man in the Mask. Written by the original creator, Bryan Bertino, and Ben Kentai, the movie proved financially successful, earning over $32.1 million on a $5 million budget. However, like the first Strangers film, it received mostly average reviews from critics.
Good news for fans of The Strangers: the series is continuing with a new trilogy directed by Renny Harlin and written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland. Filmed all at once in 2022, the new movies follow Maya (played by Madelaine Petsch) and her boyfriend Ryan (Froy Gutierrez) as they become the latest victims of the film’s infamous killers.
What’s Next for The Strangers on the Silver Screen?
The third installment of The Strangers is scheduled for release in theaters on February 6, 2026. It will conclude Maya’s fight against Dollface and Scarecrow, following the events of The Strangers: Chapter 2 where Pin-Up Girl was killed. While the first two films in the trilogy, directed by Harlin, have earned over $70 million despite a combined budget of only $8.5 million, they have received generally unfavorable reviews from critics.
After it was released, the song quickly became unavoidable online. I kept seeing it on TikTok’s ‘For You’ page, and even my producer sent it to me. It’s just something you have to accept when a song gets that popular.
Ultimately, I just want to be happy with how I did – that’s all I can really focus on. As for the movies, I think they’re designed to spark conversation, and that’s a great thing about film and art in general, according to Petsch.
The Strangers is currently available for streaming on Netflix until January 1.
