Madelaine Petsch is preparing for a terrifying climax in The Strangers – Chapter 3. Directed by Renny Harlin, who is known for his work in the thriller genre, and written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, the film follows Maya as she attempts a dangerous escape from Venus County on foot. Having lost her trust in the town after the events of The Strangers – Chapters 1 and 2, she’s determined to get away.
The new film, The Strangers – Chapter 3, stars Madison Petsch, Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath, and Richard Brake. Lionsgate has released an exclusive image to ScreenRant showing Petsch as Maya, looking distressed and covered in blood, while holding a shotgun.

The Strangers – Chapter 3 is the fifth film in The Strangers series and concludes the story that began with Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. Like the previous films, it’s based on Bryan Bertino’s 2008 horror movie, The Strangers, and continues to feature the same terrifying killers.
Renny Harlin also directed the first and second installments, and his work is central to the new Strangers trilogy. Harlin is a well-known director of popular thrillers and horror movies, including A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, Deep Blue Sea, and The Long Kiss Goodnight.
A new teaser for The Strangers – Chapter 3 reveals the masked killers are still terrorizing people. It also hints that Maya, a character who survived a home invasion in the previous films, may be taking on the role of ‘Pin-Up Girl’. Like the original Strangers movies, the attackers seem to have no clear reason for their crimes.
The latest trilogy hasn’t been well-received by critics. The first film, released in 2024, currently has a 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the second chapter scores even lower at 15% based on 74 reviews. Common criticisms point to weak character development, a predictable storyline, and an overdependence on familiar elements from the original series. Reviewers feel these new installments lack the suspense and clear direction that made the 2008 original so popular.
The final film in the trilogy seems to be a deliberate attempt to change direction, leaning into darker, more psychological themes and a bolder, more shocking conclusion. It’s uncertain if The Strangers – Chapter 3 will improve the overall reception of the series, but it’s clear the filmmakers intend to end the story with its most intense and violent installment yet.
