Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield of The Stone Roses passed away shortly after the second anniversary of his wife, Imelda, losing her battle with bowel cancer.
The couple, married for about 25 years, is survived by their 12-year-old twin sons, Gene Clarke and George Christopher. It’s a tragic loss for the boys.
Mani recently turned 63 on November 16th, but the celebration was bittersweet as Imelda wasn’t there with him, continuing a period of sadness.
Rowetta, singer with the Happy Mondays, announced the death of Imelda on November 18, 2023. Imelda was 52 years old and had been living with stage four cancer for three years.
She shared a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), saying how beautiful, brave, and loved Imelda Mounfield was, and that she would be deeply missed. Her thoughts and love are with Mani and their sons, as well as Imelda’s family and friends.
Mani and Imelda first met while working on The Stone Roses’ second album, ‘Second Coming’. They were recording at Forge Studios in Oswestry, Shropshire, and Rockfield Studios near Monmouth, Wales, between 1992 and 1994.

While Imelda was sick, Mani and she dedicated themselves to charitable work. In December 2022, they hosted an auction of music collectibles and successfully raised over £100,000 for cancer charities.
Imelda shared how cancer impacts more than just the individual diagnosed; it affects their entire circle of family and friends. She explained, ‘Cancer doesn’t just affect the person going through it, but everyone around them…’
We believe that further research could help ease the suffering of families affected by this disaster.
Mani was a strong emotional support for Imelda while she was ill, deeply invested in helping her through it.
Greg, the brother of Mani, shared the heartbreaking news of Mani’s death on Thursday, saying he was deeply saddened. The cause of death has not yet been revealed.
It is with deep sadness that I share the news of my brother’s passing. Gary Mani Mounfield, rest in peace.
Gary passed away at his home in Heaton Moor, Stockport, after suffering a seizure and collapsing. Family members reported that paramedics were called, but unfortunately, they were unable to save him.
Liam Gallagher and Shaun Ryder led tributes to bassist Mani, who also played for Primal Scream.


Liam Gallagher, the former Oasis singer and a close friend of Mani, shared his shock and sadness on X (formerly Twitter) after hearing about Mani’s passing. He described Mani as his hero and offered a message of rest in peace.
Shaun Ryder, of the band Happy Mondays, posted a picture with Mani and expressed his sadness, sending his deepest sympathy to Mani’s twin sons and family.
Mani’s bandmate, and Stone Roses lead singer, Ian Brown wrote: ‘REST IN PEACE MANi X.’
Rowetta, who played with Shaun in the Happy Mondays, also honored the musician behind the hit song ‘Fool’s Gold’. He was also recognized for his collaborations with the band Primal Scream.
She shared a heartfelt message on X, saying she’ll deeply miss him and sending her love to his sons, family, and everyone who knew and cared for him.
Kasabian’s drummer, Ian Matthews, shared his sadness over the death of Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, describing him as a kind person and incredibly talented musician, and a true legend.
Kasabian posted a tribute on their official account, expressing their sadness and shock at the news.
We’re deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Mani. He was a wonderful person, a Manchester legend, and an incredibly gifted musician with a big heart. He was also one of the first people in the music industry to support our band, and he’ll be greatly missed.
Echo & the Bunnymen expressed their deep sadness upon hearing about the passing of Mani, describing him as a beloved brother. They are in shock and hoping it’s all a bad dream, sending their love and thoughts to his family. – Mac Bunnyman ❤️

Peter Hook, the bassist and founding member of Joy Division, expressed his shock and sadness at the news, saying he was lost for words. He sent his condolences and love to Mani’s family and paid tribute to his friend, ending with a final farewell.











Oh my god, when I heard about the bassist… it just completely gutted me. I immediately went online, and everyone felt the same way! So many of us were saying we felt… empty, just totally hollow. It’s like a piece of us went with him, you know? It’s awful.
ART for MCR, a group that supports Manchester charities with concerts and other music events, said the city’s musical spirit has been forever changed.
They shared a photo of the musician and expressed their shock and sadness at the news of Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield’s passing. They described him as a hugely influential figure and a legend in the local music scene, someone who inspired countless musicians and performers.
‘Honestly, The groove, the attitude, the spirit… he shaped so much of the music that shaped us.
This is really upsetting. He was genuinely loved by everyone. I still remember being deeply moved when I saw them perform at Heaton Park.

It’s incredibly sad to hear about Mani’s passing. I only met him a couple of times, but he seemed like a genuinely good person. My wife and I went to see the Stone Roses at Heaton Park in 2012, and it was a fantastic night. Rest in peace.

On November 13th, Mani made his last post on social media, promoting an event called ‘The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, and Me: An Intimate Evening with Gary ‘Mani Moundifled’.
The planned tour was to kick off on September 16 2026 and take in dates all over Britain.
Gary announced alongside his post that this road trip might be his last, feeling he’s getting too old for it. He explained he won’t be sharing any negative stories or gossip about his bandmates – he’s always protected their privacy. Instead, he’ll be offering his personal perspective on his own life and hopes people will come say hello.
Only six days ago, Mani announced an intimate conversation tour on the band’s website.



He planned to share stories from his career at events throughout the UK from September 2026 to June 2027. These included memorable moments like the famous 1990 Spike Ilsnad concert and the Stone Roses’ return to stadiums.
Reviewers highlighted Mani’s career, referencing iconic moments like the ‘Fools Gold’ music video, performances at Wembley Stadium and Alexandra Palace, legal battles, his signature bucket hats and Adidas sportswear, the album ‘Screamadelica’, and the band The Second Coming, ultimately concluding that ‘It’s What The World Is Waiting For’.
Imelda and her husband raised money for charity by holding auctions featuring items donated by celebrities like David Beckham and the band Oasis.
She explained to the BBC that she doesn’t want to constantly focus on cancer and illness, as it takes over your thoughts.
I just needed a way to counter that negativity – something else to focus on, but something uplifting instead.
I experience tough days and periods where my illness really affects me, leading to various side effects. But I also make an effort to appear normal and keep going, so sometimes people don’t even realize I’m struggling.
Mani, from Crumpsall in Manchester, rose to fame after joining The Stone Roses in the 1980s.
Mounfield played on both Stone Roses albums and was a member of the band until it broke up in 1996. He then joined Primal Scream, but in 2011, he left that band to bring the Stone Roses back together.
