The Star Wars sequel we’ve longed for is finally coming in 2026

Now that it’s 2026, we can expect a lot of exciting new movies and shows from popular franchises in Hollywood. That includes major releases from Star Wars, produced by Lucasfilm, this year.

This year, Star Wars fans have a lot to look forward to! We’re getting the second season of Ahsoka on Disney Plus, and after six years, a new Star Wars movie – The Mandalorian and Grogu – will hit theaters in May. Plus, a much-anticipated sequel series is in development, and it’s expected to be unlike any other Star Wars story we’ve seen.

Maul: Shadow Lord is the Clone Wars sequel Star Wars fans have waited for

Among the many new Star Wars shows planned for 2026, Maul: Shadow Lord is generating a lot of buzz. The series will focus on the popular villain Darth Maul, with Sam Witwer returning to voice the character – a role he previously played in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. While it’s technically the third installment in that storyline, it will connect those two shows, serving as a direct continuation of The Clone Wars and a lead-in to Rebels.

The story takes place after the Jedi have fallen, and follows Maul as he tries to find a new direction in life. He plans to rebuild his criminal organization on Janix, a planet the Empire never reached. What happens on Janix will ultimately shape him into the tough, experienced character we see in Star Wars Rebels.

Darth Maul is often considered one of the most overlooked characters in the Star Wars saga. He first appeared as the villain in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, the film that kicked off the prequel trilogy. While that movie received a lot of criticism, Maul himself was largely ignored amidst all the spectacle. It’s been great to see him receive more attention in recent years through various animated series and shows.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always loved how Sam Witwer brought so much depth to the villain in both Clone Wars and Rebels. It was seriously awesome seeing Ray Park – the original Darth Maul from The Phantom Menace – step back into the role with motion capture for the last season of Clone Wars. And then, to see both Sam and Ray reprise their roles in the live-action Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018 was just fantastic!

Darth Maul has consistently been a compelling character, but he’s often been relegated to a supporting role, leaving fans wanting more. Many believe he would have been a fantastic villain in the sequel trilogy if George Lucas’ original ideas had been followed. Now, the upcoming Maul series promises to finally give him the focus he deserves, continuing his story after the events of The Clone Wars.
