The Split’s Abi Morgan teases “make-ups and break-ups” in new episodes

As a long-time fan of The Split, I am thrilled to hear that Abi Morgan has decided to take us on another journey with the Defoe family. Having followed this compelling series since its debut, I can’t help but feel like I’m being invited to a close friend’s wedding in sunny Barcelona! The idea of these characters stepping out of their usual London setting and into a new world is as intriguing as it is exciting.

In the forthcoming episodes of The Split: Barcelona, Abi Morgan has given us a sneak peek into some relationship ups and downs.

This month, the cherished BBC legal series makes its comeback on our screens with a double episode, where the Defoe family enjoys the sunny weather of Barcelona as they attend an essential wedding.

During a special conversation with Digital Spy, the creative mind behind the series – Morgan – shared some tantalizing insights into the upcoming episodes, as well as the driving force that inspired her to breathe life into the show once more.

She playfully hinted that she might create her own take on the show “Mamma Mia,” saying, “It’s intriguing to me to reimagine this family I’ve been writing for over 8 or 9 years, and place them in an entirely new environment.

Morgan shared how the wedding theme served as a strong base for penning the subsequent episodes, creating a series of intense, emotional situations for the characters to experience throughout the weekend.

She continues, “I’m quite fond of the design and the way it challenges me, but it’s also delightful to transport these characters to Barcelona and watch their relationships unfold in a new setting. The opportunity to have their London dramas spill into another country was too tempting to resist.

Morgan mentioned that Barcelona offered an ideal setting for filming, as both the cast and team grew enamored with the captivating vineyard location.

She shared with Digital Spy that as we visited some properties, it was when we approached the vineyard we often feature on our show, that we found ourselves drawn to a castle situated amidst trees resembling twigs at that moment.

However, we were comforted in January by the promise that it would flourish into stunning vineyards, and true to their word, it indeed bloomed when we started filming in April and May. Yet, our affection grew for Barcelona, but our focus was on exploring all of Spain overall.

Apart from revealing a fresh setting, “The Split: Barcelona” also hints at a potential romantic connection for Hannah Defoe (played by Nicola Walker).

In the official trailer, we’re introduced to enigmatic attorney Archie Moore, portrayed by Toby Stephens from “Percy Jackson,” unexpectedly attending the same wedding as Hannah and her kin. Could a romantic connection unfold?

The Split: Barcelona is set to premiere on BBC One on December 29 and 30 at 9pm, and iPlayer on December 29.
