As a lover of period dramas and a history enthusiast, I was absolutely thrilled to discover that Abi Morgan’s BBC adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ “Birdsong” has made its way onto Netflix! Having grown up watching British television, I have always been captivated by the elegance and emotional depth of their historical productions.

Being a fan of both Eddie Redmayne and Matthew Goode, I was eager to see them bring their talents to this heart-wrenching tale set during World War I. The story of young Englishman Stephen Wraysford and his affair with Isabelle Azaire (played by the captivating Clémence Poésy) is one that has stayed with me since its initial airing on BBC One in 2012.

I was particularly moved by the way the series portrayed love in all its forms, as Redmayne so eloquently pointed out in his interview with the BBC. The complexities of Stephen’s relationships, both romantic and platonic, were beautifully illustrated, making for a profound viewing experience.

The addition of “Birdsong” to Netflix is a welcome surprise for any subscriber looking to delve into wartime drama. The Split boss Abi Morgan’s BBC period drama Birdsong has just been added to Netflix (December 31).

The dual-episode show premiered on BBC One back in January 2012, featuring Eddie Redmayne from “The Day of the Jackal” and Matthew Goode, known for his role in “Downton Abbey.

The adaption, following Sebastian Faulks’ 1993 novel, unfolds over a ten-year period during World War I, narrating the tale of a young Englishman named Stephen Wraysford.

The story unfolds through a sequence of recollections, revealing Stephen’s past romantic involvement with Isabelle Azaire, played by Clémence Poésy, a woman married at the time they first encountered each other in Amiens, France, back in 1910.

In the year 1916, I found myself back on the Western Front, walking through familiar terrain that once echoed with the whispers of my greatest love.

As he strives to distance himself from his comrades and his emotions towards Isabelle, Stephen encounters tunnel worker Jack Firebrace (played by Joseph Mawle). The two forge an unanticipated bond in this scenario.

In an interview with the BBC, Redmayne earlier discussed the distinctive portrayal of love in the series, encompassing its diverse manifestations.

He mentioned that the work titled “Birdsong” isn’t only about exploring physical love, but rather encompasses various forms of love such as sensual love, intense love, and deep emotional connections.

I sincerely wish that our adaptation in some aspects does justice to many people’s beloved book. Additionally, I hope we can develop characters with depth who feel genuine, and perhaps provide a glimpse into the intricate complexity of this war that was remarkably intricate and multifaceted.
