The horror miniseries, created by Haley Z. Boston, centers on Rachel (Camila Morrone) during the week before her wedding to Nicky (Adam DiMarco). Each episode unfolds over a single day leading up to the event, revealing Rachel’s growing unease and anxiety as she gets to know Nicky’s family, the Cunninghams, and starts to question her decision to marry him.

Series creator Boston recently spoke with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley about the conclusion of ‘Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen,’ the surprising ending for Rachel, and the identity of the mysterious character known as The Sorry Man. This character is central to the Netflix horror series and appeared prominently in the first four episodes. The story revolves around the Cunningham family sharing a legend about a figure Jules met as a child, and the revelation of their true identity left viewers stunned.

So, ScreenRant asked me about ‘The Sorry Man’ – the character’s backstory, the whole mythology surrounding him, and how I developed those stories. Basically, they wanted to know where I got the idea and how it all came together. It’s always fun to talk about building a character from the ground up!

I came up with the character of ‘The Sorry Man’ while writing the show, intending him to be a distraction. Honestly, I really wish that backstory we created for him had been explored! Every time I watch the first episode and Portia tells the story, I think it would have been great to go down that path. I do think the reveal of who he actually is, and how he came to be, is satisfying. It was just a lot of fun to build that whole false history around him before revealing the truth.

Most of the Cunningham family thinks the legend of The Sorry Man is just a story, but Jules remembers a terrifying childhood experience. He recalls hearing a woman scream while lost in the woods and seeing a man with dirty, sharp fingernails attacking her, repeatedly saying “I’m sorry.” Portia claims this killer can be called upon using blood and only wants a wife. Rachel initially suspects Nicky’s father is The Sorry Man, but in a surprising reveal, it turns out to be Rachel’s own father.

Jules witnessed a shocking scene: a man stabbing a woman while repeatedly apologizing. It turned out the man was Rachel’s father, Jay. What Jules didn’t know was the full story: Rachel’s mother, Ali, had collapsed, bleeding severely. Jay desperately performed an emergency C-section to save the baby – Rachel – even as Ali was dying.

Boston explained how she developed the character of The Sorry Man. While she had more ideas for his backstory and the world around him, she’s happy that audiences were surprised by his true identity.

The new horror series on Netflix, from the creators of Stranger Things (The Duffer Brothers), is a hit with critics, earning an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s also been consistently among the most popular shows on Netflix since it premiered.
