Knowledge graphs facilitate the capture of fine-grained user preferences by representing entities – items, attributes, or concepts – as nodes and the relationships between them as edges. This structure allows for the encoding of complex preferences beyond simple item ratings; for example, a user might prefer “action movies” directed by “Christopher Nolan” and starring “Leonardo DiCaprio”. These relationships are stored as triples (subject, predicate, object), enabling inference of implicit preferences; if a user likes movies with specific actors and directors, the knowledge graph can recommend other content sharing those relationships. The graph’s structure also supports reasoning and disambiguation, accurately capturing nuanced preferences that would be lost in traditional methods like one-hot encoding or simple keyword matching.
Integrating sequential, collaborative, and knowledge graph-based approaches to user profile construction allows for a more complete representation of user interests than any single method provides. Sequential recommendation captures immediate, context-dependent preferences from interaction order, while collaborative filtering establishes broader, long-term interests by identifying users with similar behaviors. Knowledge graphs then augment this with explicit relationships between items and concepts, providing a structured understanding of why a user might prefer something. This combined approach results in a dynamic profile that evolves with user behavior, adapts to changing contexts, and facilitates more accurate and nuanced recommendations. The resulting user profile is not static, but a continuously updated model incorporating both short-term actions and enduring preferences, represented within a network of interconnected knowledge.
Responsible Computing: Safeguarding User Trust in a Data-Driven World
Responsible computing necessitates a proactive approach to user data handling, prioritizing confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Beyond legal compliance, ethical considerations demand minimizing data collection to only what is necessary for specified purposes, anonymizing or pseudonymizing data whenever possible, and employing techniques like data minimization and purpose limitation to reduce privacy risks. Failure to prioritize user privacy can result in significant financial penalties, reputational damage, and erosion of user trust, highlighting the critical importance of embedding privacy considerations throughout the entire system lifecycle.

These biases can originate from various sources including historical data reflecting societal biases, algorithmic design choices, or skewed sampling methods. Consequently, robots can adapt their communication style to individual users, provide detailed explanations, offer tailored advice, and even participate in open-ended discussions, ultimately creating more effective and satisfying human-robot partnerships.

The responsible computing module, central to this work, recognizes that even as systems age and adapt, preserving the integrity of that accumulated history – and ensuring its ethical use – is paramount. Every interaction, every preference recorded, is a moment in the system’s timeline, shaping its future behavior and demanding careful consideration.
What’s Ahead?
The integration of recommender systems into social robotics, as explored within this work, does not resolve the inherent challenge of building enduring systems-it merely shifts the point of failure. Personalization, predicated on user profiling, introduces a new vector for decay. Models, however ‘foundation’ they may be, are snapshots in time, and the human subject is notoriously resistant to static representation. The inevitable divergence between model and modeled will not be a bug, but a feature-a predictable entropy. The question, then, is not how to prevent this drift, but how to engineer systems that absorb, and even benefit from, the accumulated errors.
Further work will undoubtedly focus on the refinement of ranking algorithms and the mitigation of bias within user profiles. However, a more fruitful line of inquiry may lie in exploring the legibility of these systems. Can a robot, operating on probabilistic inferences, articulate the rationale behind its recommendations, and more importantly, acknowledge the limitations of its understanding? Transparency, in this context, is not simply about ethical responsibility; it’s about building systems capable of graceful degradation.
Ultimately, the true test of this framework will not be its ability to predict user preference, but its resilience in the face of inevitable obsolescence. Time is not a metric to be optimized, but the medium within which all systems erode. The most successful social robots will not be those that strive for perfect prediction, but those that age with a degree of dignity-learning from their mistakes, and accepting the inherent impermanence of both themselves and the humans they serve.
