A new movie continuing the story of The Simpsons Movie is coming! The sequel will be released 20 years after the original – here’s all the information you need about this surprising project.
The animated sitcom has been on the air for an incredible 36 years, and its 37th season began on Sunday (September 28th). Along with the 791 regular episodes, there have also been some special installments.
The most significant change came with a 2007 feature film that became a huge commercial hit. It earned over $536 million in theaters, despite only costing $75 million to make.

Even though the film did very well in theaters and critics liked it, and fans had been asking for more, a sequel hadn’t been made for the past 18 years – that is, until now.
20th Century Studios announced on Instagram that a follow-up movie will be released in theaters on July 23, 2027. The announcement featured a movie poster showing Homer reaching for a doughnut, accompanied by the phrase: “Homer’s coming back for seconds”.
One viewer also speculated that the movie might revisit the running gag of Spider-Pig from the first film, posting: “Surely [there’ll] be spiderpig 2 in the movie as well.”
One user noted that after Bart wrote ‘I will not wait 20 years for another movie‘ on the chalkboard, it seems he was correct. Since 2007, 20 years have passed, bringing us to 2027, and the sequel is now actually happening. The user added, ‘I always knew they would plan this.‘
This unexpected announcement arrives only a few months after multiple producers of the show discussed why another movie wasn’t being planned. Series creator Matt Groening mentioned that making the first film was a very difficult undertaking.
Making the first movie was incredibly challenging. We didn’t have a backup plan – a ‘B team’ – we worked on the movie and kept the series going simultaneously,” he explained. “We were under so much pressure that we even had a countdown clock displayed on the wall.”
We jokingly called it The Simpsons death clock – it tracked the time remaining, down to the seconds, until the movie had to be completed. He explained that the pressure caused them to struggle, but added that a sequel would be great if things worked out perfectly.
The Simpsons Movie 2 is scheduled for release on 23 July 2027.
