Bad news for fans of The Simpsons! The highly anticipated sequel, currently called The Simpsons 2, has been delayed. Originally slated for a Marvel movie’s release date, it’s now expected to hit theaters in July 2027. This means it will be 20 years since The Simpsons Movie first came out – a longer wait than between the show’s debut and the first film!
20th Century Studios revealed the new release date for The Simpsons 2 on Instagram, along with a funny poster. The movie will now hit theaters on September 3, 2027, over Labor Day weekend. Originally, it was scheduled for July 23, 2027, just before the 20th anniversary of The Simpsons Movie. The poster shows Homer hilariously planting a flag marking the new release date… right in his foot! The old date is crossed out. You can see the poster below.
‘The Simpsons Movie’ Release Date Change Is a Big Deal
Although it might not seem important, delaying the release of The Simpsons 2 has some real consequences for Disney. They no longer have a major film scheduled to finish July 2027 – a time frame that proved very successful with the launches of Deadpool & Wolverine and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in 2024 and 2025. Disney may have pushed back The Simpsons 2 to avoid competing with A Minecraft 2, which Warner Bros. is also releasing on July 23, 2027.
Will the new movie release date affect the premiere of The Simpsons’ 39th season, which typically begins in late September 2027? Disney might push back the season premiere to give the film more attention, especially since the upcoming season will only have 18 episodes. Currently, no details about the plot of The Simpsons 2 have been revealed, mirroring the secrecy surrounding the first movie. The main voice actors – Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria, and Harry Shearer – are all expected to return and voice their characters.
Everyone is wondering if The Simpsons 2 will have the biggest opening weekend over Labor Day. Currently, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings holds the record with $94.6 million over the four-day holiday. The first Simpsons Movie earned $74 million when it came out in 2007. Although some might think The Simpsons isn’t as popular as it used to be, the show has recently gained new fans through its partnership with Fortnite, which could create excitement for the new movie. Interestingly, The Simpsons 2 is being released on the same date – September 3rd – that Shang-Chi premiered in 2021.
