With The Simpsons recently reaching its 800th episode, many are wondering how much longer the show – which first aired in 1989 – will continue. Current executive producer Matt Selman hasn’t revealed when it might end, but he has discussed how the ending could happen.
It seems the show won’t end with a big, conclusive finale. Instead, it will simply conclude without a final episode.
That’s because the show has already finished its season, or at least presented an episode that felt like a finale.

In an interview with The Wrap, Selman explained that they created an episode about a year and a half ago which was a humorous take on a series finale.
We threw in every possible idea for how the show could end, all in one episode. It was my way of saying we weren’t planning a traditional series finale. We basically did a finale in the middle of the season, poking fun at the idea of neatly wrapping things up or ending the story.

One reason for this is the show’s structure, which Selman likened to the movie Groundhog Day. He explained that the show isn’t meant to have lasting changes, with characters essentially starting fresh each week. While there are occasional exceptions – like when a character dies – the show generally resets to maintain its format.
According to Selman, if the show were to end, it wouldn’t have a grand finale. It would just be a typical episode featuring the family, maybe with a few subtle hidden references, but without any big emotional goodbyes.

Our goal is for each episode to feel like a complete, unique, and high-quality short film, distinct from all the others.
Creating something truly original is tough, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. We want to earn the freedom to make a TV show where we can explore our ideas and still connect with an audience.
