The Simpsons finally answers series-long mystery about Homer
As a seasoned gamer of life with over three decades under my belt, I’ve witnessed the evolution of pop culture, and one constant has been the ever-enduring animated sitcom, The Simpsons. Growing up, their antics were a staple in our household, and their witty humor was a beacon of light during those formative years.
It appears that a long-standing mystery from the history of The Simpsons may have just found an answer.
For over three decades now, this cartoon sitcom has held a prominent position on television, narrating tales about both the title family and the townsfolk of Springfield since 1989.
For three and a half decades, there’s been a consistently funny recurring gag about Homer, who’s often shown as not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, somehow retaining his position at the Power Plant, despite numerous accidents and errors on the job.
It appears that the puzzle was unraveled in the fourth installment of the 36th season, known as ‘Shoddy Heat’. This episode disclosed that Homer’s grandfather, Grandpa Abe, had previously struck a deal with Mr. Burns, the proprietor of the power plant.
In this latest episode, I found myself delving into Abe’s past as a private investigator, a fact that was surprisingly brought to light when an old body was discovered, accompanied by a business card that read: ‘Simpson and O’Donnell – Private Investigators.’ From then on, Abe shared captivating tales of his partnership with Billy O’Donnell.
The narrative traces its roots to 1982 as the duo delved into the affairs of Montgomery Burns following an enlistment by his then-girlfriend, Agnes Skinner. Later on, Billy disappeared during their investigation of Burns, who cryptically stated that he possessed a “ticket to paradise” with only a one-way journey.
In a dilemma over seeking revenge for his ex-coworker and ensuring the safety of his family, Abe hesitantly agreed to Burns’ proposition: Homer would be hired at the power plant and would maintain job security regardless of his work performance.
One notable characteristic of this series that continues to intrigue viewers is its seemingly psychic ability to foretell events. As showrunner Matt Selman recently pointed out, this foresight isn’t actually psychic; instead, it comes from a deep understanding of both historical patterns and statistical probabilities.
He stated that his usual response, which people often find unpleasant, is that if one studies history and mathematics thoroughly, it becomes virtually unavoidable for us to make predictions about certain events. This happens because when you say enough things, some of them will inevitably align with reality, and that’s where the mathematical aspect comes into play.
The Simpsons airs Sunday nights on FOX in the US. The show currently streams on Disney+ in the UK.
