The Silver Surfer Debuts in ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Trailer

What strikes me the most about the latest trailer for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” isn’t just its setting in an apparently “retro-futuristic” New York City, or the female portrayal of the Silver Surfer by Julia Garner. Instead, it’s the fact that this film, being the first Marvel Studios project centered around their founding and iconic heroes who kick-started the so-called “Marvel Age of Comics” in the 1960s, seems to closely resemble a storyline for an already existing “Fantastic Four” movie.

The film referred to here is “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”. In this movie, Reed Richards and Sue Storm are on the brink of their wedding when their ceremony is disrupted by the arrival of the Silver Surfer, who serves as the herald for an indomitable alien deity known as Galactus. In “First Steps”, however, Reed and Sue are preparing for the birth of their first child when their peaceful home life is disrupted by… the arrival of the Silver Surfer, once again serving as the herald for Galactus, the relentless alien god.

With all things considered, I’m certain there will be numerous distinctions among the films in the end. And it’s no secret that Galactus is one of the Fantastic Four’s most formidable adversaries. (It’s also known that their most iconic Doctor Doom has been earmarked for the upcoming Avengers sequel.) However, there are numerous untouched Fantastic Four characters and storylines that could make for a fantastic standalone film.

Anyway, here is the new trailer for the film.

The trailer is impressive! I’m fond of its blend of old-school futurism! The outfits are well-designed! The modern take on the Thing is fantastic! However, I do hope the movie won’t share the same feel as Silver Surfer’s Ascension.

There’s a new poster for the movie as well.

Here is The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ official synopsis:

The Fab Four: Initial Footsteps presents Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kiry), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm/The Thick-Skinned One (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). They are confronted with their toughest predicament yet. Struggling to reconcile their heroic duties with the profound ties of family, they strive to safeguard Earth from a ravenous cosmic deity named Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his otherworldly herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). But things take an even more personal turn when Galactus’ intent to consume the planet along with all its inhabitants becomes not only a threat to Earth but also to their own lives.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to open in theaters on July 25.

The 10 Best Comic Book Movies of the Last 10 Years (2015-2024)

10. The Batman (2022)

In Matt Reeves’ gritty and intellectual film, “The Batman,” Robert Pattinson steps into the role of Bruce Wayne, who is only two years into his crime-fighting tenure as Gotham City’s vigilante. Here, he crosses paths with Paul Dano’s Riddler, a villain who is murdering Gotham’s elite as part of a twisted puzzle that only the Dark Knight can unravel.

Previous Batman films have portrayed the character with gravity, but none have delved so deeply into the essence of what this character symbolizes — not just for his admirers, but also for the fictional citizens of Gotham City. This level of thoughtfulness is unprecedented, and it isn’t until “The Batman”‘s intricate series of conclusions that I can draw parallels with “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

9. Nimona (2023)

Although it’s often the live-action superheroes that grab the largest budgets and garner the most attention, some of the finest comic book adaptations lately have been animated. For instance, the clever movie “Nimona,” inspired by the graphic novel by Noelle Stevenson. In this film, the main character Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz) is a shapeshifting misfit in a quasi-futuristic medieval world who allies with another outcast (Riz Ahmed) to overthrow the villains who have taken over their kingdom. With its mischievous humor, vibrant animation, and potent message for young viewers about embracing themselves as they are, “Nimona” serves as an enjoyable demonstration that heroes can appear in various forms – sometimes even within a single being.

8. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)

James Gunn masterfully concluded his “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, offering a perfect blend of Marvel elements: Thrilling action scenes, quirky sci-fi visuals, and deeply moving characters that we grow incredibly attached to. Take Rocket Raccoon, for instance, a B-list character who was only featured in a few comics before now, transformed by Gunn into one of Marvel’s most profound and heartbreaking heroes in “Guardians Vol. 3.” Following a series of underwhelming Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Gunn made it seem effortless to recapture the essence of classic Marvel storytelling. Unfortunately for Marvel fans, he later returned to DC.

7. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Without a doubt, ‘Homecoming’ stands out among the most enjoyable films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It boasts captivating characters, thrilling Spider-Man scenes, and an unexpected street vendor requesting a flip from Spider-Man (which he delivers). Aren’t you hooked?! Tom Holland has been a treasure for Spider-Man enthusiasts; he excels at portraying both the wisecracking, acrobatic Spider-Man and the heartbroken Peter Parker. Among all his Marvel films, ‘Homecoming’ showcases his finest performance.

6. Logan (2017)

For Hugh Jackman and the Wolverine series, the third attempt truly paid off with the film “Logan”. This movie magnificently portrayed its title character in a brutally tragic manner, which was accentuated by its first R-rating, leading to a grittier, more intense journey that perfectly mirrored the storyline of our hero’s last days. By reducing the number of characters, it effectively addressed the congestion issue often seen in main X-Men films. Patrick Stewart delivered an exceptional performance as an aging Professor X, struggling with mental decline and thus losing control of one of the world’s most potent weapons. Marvel wisely chose not to reverse the ending of “Logan” in movies like “Deadpool & Wolverine”. The scene featuring the “X”… it’s an unforgettable moment.

5. The LEGO Batman Movie (2017)

For approximately two years, my eldest daughter adored the movie “The LEGO Batman Movie”. We must have watched it countless times during that period. It’s safe to say that this film is one of the most enjoyable movies from the past ten years. With countless visual jokes, puns, and references to lesser-known Batman lore, not to mention Will Arnett’s brilliantly arrogant portrayal of LEGO Batman, it kept us entertained. I’ve watched many children’s films over the last decade; some amusing, some dull. However, “The LEGO Batman Movie” is hands-down the funniest. Instead of making fun of the character or comics, it’s a heartfelt tribute to everything that makes the Dark Knight so iconic.

4. Avengers: Endgame (2019)

In no other superhero film has there been such a formidable challenge as Avengers: Endgame. The movie had the task of gracefully resolving one of the most monumental cliffhangers in cinematic history, tying up numerous plotlines from over 20 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, and still managing to be an engaging standalone piece. Remarkably, they accomplished this feat. Remarkably, the abundance of Easter eggs did not hinder the narrative flow, the exciting action sequences, or the poignant end to Robert Downey Jr.’s journey as Tony Stark.

3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

Introducing an expanded perspective for “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” this upcoming sequel introduces Miles Morales to Spider-Man 2099 and his “Spider Society,” a group dedicated to safeguarding the multiverse from threats like the Spot, a new villain who can spontaneously create interdimensional gateways. Despite the visual appeal of “Into the Spider-Verse,” “Across the Spider-Verse” promises an even more captivating and daring narrative. For instance, the world of Spider-Gwen is depicted as a living watercolor painting, while Spider-Man India originates from a vibrant cityscape known as “Mumbattan.” The potential drawback of “Across the Spider-Verse”? It’s the first installment in a two-part series, and at times it does feel like setting up the overarching story.

2. Black Panther (2018)

The magical realm of Wakanda in the movie Black Panther feels even more profound today than it did in 2018, for six distinct reasons. This Marvel Cinematic Universe masterpiece owes much to the vision and skill of director Ryan Coogler, who breathed life into the stunning world of Wakanda and filled it with an extraordinary ensemble of actors. Chadwick Boseman, sadly no longer with us, played the titular role brilliantly, portraying Black Panther as a strong yet compassionate figure torn by duty but unyielding in his commitment to safeguard his kingdom. With Boseman’s passing, we’ll never know how T’Challa’s story would have unfolded, or what further adventures he might have embarked on after overcoming challenges from adversaries like M’Baku (Winston Duke) and Erik “Killmonger” Stevens (Michael B. Jordan). At least we can continue to enjoy this captivating, action-packed film.

1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

In my opinion, among all the Spider-Man films out there, none quite captures the essence like “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” At least, until “Across the Spider-Verse” graced our screens. This masterpiece features an impressive ensemble of web-slinging champions, including Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and the relatable Peter B. Parker – a middle-aged, doughy version of the original hero. The film also vividly embodies Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s moral standpoint from the classic “Amazing Spider-Man” comics of the 1960s, emphasizing their belief that anyone can become a hero. It transforms this concept into a visually stunning tribute to their inspiring ideals.
