In the gritty action-thriller “Havoc,” starring Tom Hardy and Gareth Evans, The Triads serve as the main adversaries, a formidable group with roots in reality. Within the movie’s narrative, The Triads resemble yakuza organizations, wielding immense power over the unnamed city where the story unfolds. Headed by the ambitious and daring Tsui Fong, son of Clarice Fong, these Triads are ruthless assassins who have their fingers in all the corruption and illegal activities within the city. Characters such as the treacherous Ching even manipulate police forces, where characters like Walker and his former partner Vincent are employed.

The central conflict in Havoc emerged following the shocking assassination of Tsui, head of the Triads, at his hideout. This act was orchestrated by Vincent, a corrupt cop, along with two accomplices named Hayes and Jake. Their target wasn’t justice for Tsui’s death but rather revenge, as they were seeking Charlie and Mia, two individuals who had stolen a truckload of washing machines laden with cocaine. Interestingly, despite being a police officer, Vincent was not interested in apprehending Charlie and Mia; instead, he aimed to eliminate them because the cocaine-filled stash they took was intended for his personal gain.

They Have A Hand In Every Industry In The Corrupt City

In the fictional city depicted in “Havoc,” the Triads hold immense power and influence across virtually every sector, including politics. A significant portion of their wealth comes from drug trafficking, particularly cocaine. Their control extends to such an extent that nothing enters or leaves the city without them leaving their mark and receiving a share. The Triads are not just armed, but they are also well-versed in martial arts, as demonstrated by numerous warriors and assassins among their ranks. Unlike typical street gangs who primarily rely on firearms, these Triad fighters possess exceptional combat skills, excelling in various fighting styles. Their power can be compared to that of the police force, if not surpassing it.

In the turbulent city of Havoc, the Triads wield an influence so immense that challenging them willfully, and moreover attempting to rob from them, would be a reckless move. Alas, Mia, who relies on stealing cars and dismantling them for parts, unwittingly took a vehicle owned by a Triad member, which placed her in a precarious position of owing Tsui at the start of the movie.

In an effort to repay a debt owed to Tsui, Mia and Charlie decide to take the cocaine. However, following Tsui’s demise, Clarice, Tsui’s mother, suspects Mia and Charlie of wrongdoing. This suspicion underscores the unwavering vengefulness and loyalty within the Triad organization, particularly their leader, as they seek retribution for one of their own.

She Uses the Full Force Of The Gang To Avenge Her Son

After Tsui’s demise, his mother Clarice assumes control of the Triads and uses their power to seek vengeance. She initially suspects Mia and Charlie as the ones who murdered Tsui, but later in Havoc, she learns that Ching, whom she had underestimated as a potential successor, was the one who deceived her. Clarice and the Triads do not uncover Vincent’s machinations until the end of Havoc, which proves to be too late. Following Clarice’s passing, it remains uncertain who leads the Triads after the events depicted in Havoc’s finale.

In the film, Clarice Fong is often called “Mother” by her fellow Triads, but Ellie had identified her earlier. Although not much is known about Clarice, she’s a highly respected and influential leader within the gang. She was primarily seen as a avenger seeking vengeance for her son’s death. It seems that under her command, the Triads operated extensively, and she held more power than her late son did as the previous boss. Now, with Clarice and numerous Triad fighters deceased, it might be that Walker has inadvertently addressed one of the city’s major issues.

The Triad Is A Real Criminal Syndicate That Originated In China

A significant number of characters in Havoc are loosely modeled after the Triads, a notorious crime syndicate with roots tracing back to 1674 China. Initially, these secret societies aimed to overthrow the Chinese Manchurians and reestablish the Ming Dynasty; however, as time passed, the Triads morphed from a patriotic movement into a criminal organization, as stated by the U.S. Department of Justice.

From extortion and murder to kidnapping, illegal gambling, blackmail, arson, assault, loan sharking, criminal intimidation, and street-level drug trafficking – the list is long and chilling. Despite the passage of time, their influence persists in the contemporary world.
