The Shocking Truth Behind the Ending of Netflix’s Under a Dark Sun
In the Netflix miniseries titled “Under a Dark Sun“, originating from France, the final episodes unveil a succession of shocking disclosures that resolve the central enigma, all the while exposing entrenched secrets and morally ambiguous choices. Over the course of six intricately connected episodes, the narrative revolves around Alba, a woman with a difficult past, who accepts a position at a remote flower farm in Provence. Following the unexpected demise of Arnaud Lasserre, the farm’s owner, Alba finds herself under suspicion for the crime. However, what initially appears to be a murder investigation soon transforms into something far more intricate: a sordid family history marked by concealed parentage, enforced secrecy, and generations of manipulation.
In this summary, you’ll find an explanation of the events that transpire in the closing episode, along with insights on how the conclusion redefines our previous understanding of things.
Who is Alba’s biological father?
A significant theme that weaves throughout the series is the enigma surrounding Alba’s lineage. As the story progresses, clues hint towards her being linked to the Lasserre family. Although it appears that Arnaud is Alba’s father, the final episode presents a surprising revelation: Alba is actually Mathieu, Arnaud’s son, who was thought to be dead, is her true father.
Previously, it comes to light that Mathieu had a short romance with Nadia, who was a farmhand at the time. When their relationship concluded, Mathieu was unaware that she was carrying his child. Arnaud, intent on safeguarding the family’s reputation, compelled Nadia to surrender her baby and depart from the estate upon discovering the pregnancy. Alba, born away from the farm, remained ignorant of her background, while Mathieu remained clueless about fathering a child.
Mathieu grows suspicious upon recognizing a likeness between Alba and Nadia. Intrigued, he discreetly arranges for a DNA test to be conducted. The results of the test validate his doubts.
Why did Arnaud include Alba in his will?
When Arnaud passes away, Alba’s unexpected inclusion in his will takes everyone by surprise – until the entire tale is revealed.
After being away from the farm for several years, Nadia manages to reestablish contact with Alba. Her primary goal is to provide a brighter future for her own daughter. Nadia reaches out to Arnaud via email, sending pictures of Alba and her son, and recalls the time when he made her relinquish her child. In return for his agreement to hide their past, she requests that he legally acknowledge Alba as an inheritor.
To prevent a public embarrassment, Arnaud chooses to go along and discretely includes Alba in his will, providing her with a share of his property.
Who killed Arnaud?
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement as the central enigma of this captivating series unfolds. In the climactic finale, it’s revealed that the perpetrator was none other than Manon—Arnaud’s granddaughter and Mathieu’s daughter. What a twist!
In the past, Manon’s mother, Joséphine, was secretly placed in an institution by Arnaud to prevent her from exposing that Mathieu had fathered a child with Nadia. As a result, Joséphine became virtually nonexistent within the family. When Manon eventually uncovers her mother’s whereabouts in a mental health facility, she decides to retaliate against those who kept this truth hidden.
First, she murders Arnaud, subsequently assuming the role of Alba’s attorney as a strategic ploy, aiming to penetrate the investigation and manipulate the storyline in her favor, thereby shielding herself from suspicion.
Valentin and the attempt to kill Alba
Initially, Valentin seems like he could back Alba. Yet, it’s only later on in the show that we discover his actual part.
It turns out that Manon secretly contracted Valentin to kill Alba. However, when the plot backfires, she accuses him of murdering Arnaud instead. This move not only diverts suspicion from herself, but also removes a possible obstacle for her disguise.
Hadrien’s death and Léo’s misjudgment
As a passionate cinephile, I find myself immersed in a heart-wrenching plot twist: my dear character, Hadrien – Manon’s brother – meets an unfortunate end due to a tragic case of mistaken identity. Léo, Alba’s son, had looked forward to spending time with Hadrien on the farm, honing his archery skills. However, when Léo lays eyes upon a tattoo on Hadrien’s back, my heart skips a beat, for it mirrors the tattoo of the individual who previously abducted him within the series. The similarity sends chills down my spine and leaves me questioning what unfolds next in this gripping storyline.
Believing Hadrien was his abductor, Léo shoots and kills him.
In due course, it seems clear that the true kidnapper was Manon, bearing the identical tattoo. The confusion between siblings unfortunately results in another tragic outcome, serving as the foundation for a concluding agreement between Alba and Manon.
The pact between Alba and Manon
As a movie buff, I find myself captivated by the intricate web of secrets between these two characters – Manon’s involvement in Arnaud’s demise and Léo’s accountability for Hadrien’s fate. In a quiet corner, away from prying eyes, they seal a clandestine pact.
In this alternate narrative, Hadrien is portrayed as Arnaud’s murderer. This conveniently wraps up the investigation without any deeper examination. Regrettably, neither Manon nor Alba experience justice, but they both maintain their liberty, if not the true sense of it.
The ending doesn’t offer moral resolution — only a calculated exchange of silence.
Alba’s new life and the fate of the farm
Towards the end, Alba is found tending to her work at a peaceful restaurant, distanced from the turmoil of the Lasserre estate. There’s no indication that she has maintained contact with Manon or any other individuals from the farm. Instead, it appears to be an understated effort on her part to start anew, not a grand comeback.
At last, in a subtle turn of events, it’s disclosed that Nadia, Alba’s mom, has bought the flower farm. It’s a quiet act of repossession, recovering what was taken from her long ago. Without any direct conflict, she comes back – this time with ownership instead of being banished.
