The Shocking Truth Behind The Better Sister’s Twisty Ending Revealed!
In the same vein as the socialite crowd of New York City preparing for summer escapades in the Hamptons, Amazon Prime presents a gripping mystery centered around a prominent lawyer discovered dead in his Hamptons residence.
Released on May 29th, “The Better Sister” is a TV series based on Alafair Burke’s novel with the same title. The story revolves around magazine executive Chloe Taylor, played by Jessica Biel, who embarks on a quest to uncover the murderer of her husband, Adam (Corey Stoll). However, when Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan), their son and initial prime suspect, enters the picture, it becomes evident that beneath the dazzle and luxury, there’s a complex and troubling family dynamic unfolding.
Joining to escalate the tension is Chloe’s long-estranged sister, Nicky (played by Elizabeth Banks), who reappears in her life to aid during Ethan’s trial for Adam’s murder. Historically, Chloe feels superior as the “better sister,” given her stable career and seemingly ideal family compared to Nicky, whose battles with addiction have often left her life in disarray. However, by the end of the story, audiences might find themselves questioning what truly defines a better sister.
This show is a timeless mystery that keeps you guessing until the end. Here’s a glimpse into the compelling family dynamics featured in this suspenseful tale, as well as the unexpected twist at the climax.
What is the central question of The Better Sister?
The show’s central question is simple: Who stabbed Adam Taylor to death?
Chloe and Adam reside in opulence, enjoying a penthouse apartment in Manhattan that boasts a terrace encircling Central Park, as well as a second home in the Hamptons. During the day, Chloe manages a women’s magazine, while Adam works at an esteemed law firm. In the evenings, they frequent high-profile galas.
On a particular evening, while they’re residing at their Hamptons residence, Chloe enters the living area to discover her spouse sprawled in a puddle of his own blood.
In the second episode, I found myself in a shocking turn of events when my son, Ethan, was taken into custody for allegedly murdering his father, Adam. To make matters even more intriguing, it wasn’t just one unexpected twist but a double whammy. The police reached out to my estranged sister Nicky (played brilliantly by Elizabeth Banks), revealing that she is actually Ethan’s biological mother. What a rollercoaster ride this mystery series has become!
Even though the police think it’s best for Ethan to be with his mother Nicky at this time, Chloe sees her sister as an addict who might complicate the situation further. It turns out that Nicky is Adam’s former wife, and they had Ethan together. Chloe has long been told that Adam was granted custody of Ethan after discovering Nicky unconscious, drunk, with her face down in a pool, and Ethan nearly drowning beside her.
A family on trial
The Taylor family’s dirty laundry is aired during Ethan’s trial.
Ethan confides in his attorney Michelle Sanders (played by Gloria Reuben) that Nicky handed him an old-school cellphone following their grandfather’s funeral, and he had been secretly talking to Nicky, which was unknown to Chloe and Adam. The prosecutor suggests that if Ethan kept the phone hidden from Chloe and Adam, it implies he might not be truthful about other matters as well.
Subsequently, it comes to light that Ethan’s email is connected to a Reddit account which posted menacing messages concerning his father, one of which advocated for Adam’s demise. This revelation, as Ethan clarifies towards the end of episode 5, stemmed from moments when he felt like wanting him eliminated.
In episode 6, Chloe testified about an altercation with Adam where he shoved her into their bedroom wall, causing her to fall. She claimed that he accused her of pushing him towards taking a job at a law firm, when he actually preferred work in the public sector.
In the final moments of the sixth episode, Sanders emphasizes to the jurors that no murder weapon has turned up, there’s no trace of Ethan’s blood at the crime site, and no one has testified to seeing Ethan present during the alleged crime.
In summary, the jury determined that Ethan was found innocent. However, the story doesn’t conclude there – even after the trial has ended, new shocking revelations continue to surface.
Upon arriving home, Ethan discovers police records concerning the evening he was separated from his mother. He had been led to believe he nearly drowned, but the report indicates no water inhalation signs. Instead, it mentions Nicky’s system contained Xanax, Ambien, and alcohol, and a flashback shows Adam preparing a cocktail of crushed pills, vodka, and lemonade for Nicky. Nicky confesses to knowing she had been drugged with help from a local lawyer, but this information is new to Chloe, who is now troubled by Adam’s spirit, who claims he wanted full custody of Ethan due to Nicky’s substance abuse problems and the possibility that she might have endangered Ethan.
In an unexpected twist, it’s revealed that the individual whom Chloe perceived as destroying her life was actually the one who ended up saving it instead.
How does The Better Sister end?
12 hours before Adam’s demise, Ethan conveyed to Nicky via their old-school cell phone that he had witnessed Adam shoving Chloe while attempting to capture a selfie on their rooftop with Central Park as the backdrop, intended for Nicky. He also mentioned this wasn’t the first instance of Adam causing her harm. This revelation explains why, when Chloe discovered the flip phone in episode 3 and urged Nicky to charge it, Nicky hastily erased the device’s contents.
In a flash, Nicky made up her mind to head straight to the Hamptons from Ohio. She stayed put in her vehicle outside the Taylors’ residence until Adam showed up in a taxi. Upon his arrival, she stepped out of her car and trailed him inside to confront him. When Adam hinted at contacting the authorities, Nicky countered by threatening to disclose his actions against Chloe and revealed that Ethan was privy to the secret as well. In response, Adam grabbed hold of Nicky’s arm and shoved her. It was then that Nicky brandished a pocket knife and jabbed it into Adam’s neck.
It turns out Ethan had been trying to shield Chloe all along, which explains why his DNA was present at the crime scene. He thought Chloe had killed Adam and panicked in the living room, scattering items to give the impression of an intruder breaking into the house. Furthermore, viewers can comprehend why Ethan mentioned having a gun at school during episode 3; he feared his father might use it against his mother or vice versa. In the final episode, Ethan confesses that he regrets not summoning an ambulance when he saw Adam was still alive at the crime scene and instead rushed away from the house feeling guilty.
The final scene reveals that only Chloe is aware that Nicky was responsible for Adam’s death, as no one else has figured it out. Detective Nancy Guidry (Kim Dickens) manages to deduce this after questioning Nicky’s mother and learning that Nicky had disclosed the incident before the authorities shared the news with Nicky. However, Detective Guidry was taken off the case due to her boss viewing Nicky’s mother as an untrustworthy source, and a recent article highlighting Guidry’s past errors in detective work.
At the close of the episode, Chloe and Nicky find themselves on a beach, discussing the idea of penning a book about their shared experiences. As Chloe confides in Nicky, “I can’t imagine telling my story without you, and frankly, it wouldn’t be worth telling at all.” This previously estranged duo has now grown closer than they ever have before.
