The Shawshank Redemption star William Sadler mourns death of wife after 46 years of marriage

As a dedicated admirer of the arts and a follower of the lives of the artists who enrich our screen with their talent, I am deeply saddened by the news of Marni Joan Bakst’s passing after a valiant fight against cancer. William Sadler, an actor whose work I have long appreciated, shared this heartbreaking news on his Facebook page, along with a beautiful photograph of him and his wife taken on their wedding day in 1978.

Actor William Sadler, known for “The Shawshank Redemption,” shared the news that his wife Marni Joan Bakst passed away following 46 years of being married to her.

This week, Sadler, aged 74, announced on his Facebook page, accompanied by a picture from their wedding day on May 6, 1978, which depicted him and Bakst.

Just moments before walking down the altar, the pair was captured casually seated at a breakfast table, sipping coffee while wearing their bathrobes.

In the caption with the photo, Sadler shared that Bakst passed away on Wednesday, following a two-year battle against cancer.

Following an extraordinary 45-year marriage, I struggle to express or fully grasp the depth of it all,” he penned down.

In the span of many years married, Sadler and Bakst had a daughter named Sadler Colley Bakst, who was 38 years old at that time.

Yesterday morning, around dawn, my beloved wife, Marni Bakst, sadly succumbed to a two-year struggle against cancer. This was the message Sadler shared on Facebook yesterday.

He continued, ‘I’m still struggling to fully grasp it, but our wonderful forty-five-year marriage has been truly extraordinary.’

In due time and some space, I may articulate more smoothly about this remarkable individual who is an artist, feminist, spouse, and parent. For the moment, I appreciate your understanding and graciousness. Sincerely, Bill.

Last year on their anniversary, Sadler paid a touching tribute to his wife by sharing a heartfelt message and the very same photo that he subsequently posted to announce her passing.

Sadler shared this photo, taken on our wedding day forty-five years back, on the very same date last May,” is a natural and easy to read paraphrase.

He remarked sweetly, ‘That striking young lady with the captivating eyes is none other than Miss Marni Bakst. I, myself, was fortunate to be in her presence.’

After all these years, I continue to make her a cup of coffee, her eyes remain as stunningly beautiful as ever, and I remain the most fortunate man not only on this planet but also any other. Here’s to many more years together, Marni! Happy Anniversary!

Throughout the entirety of Sadler’s acting career, dating back even prior to his first Broadway appearance in Neil Simon’s Biloxi Blues in 1985, Bakst was consistently by his side.

In the critically-acclaimed 1994 drama, The Shawshank Redemption, his standout performance was portraying a long-term inmate named Heywood over a significant period of time.

The film, which was adapted from a novel by Stephen King, features Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman and is frequently praised as one of the best movies ever created.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but appreciate the impressive roles that Sadler has taken on throughout his career. For instance, who could forget his portrayal of the President of the United States in Iron Man 3 (2013) and Die Hard 2 (1990)? It’s truly awe-inspiring to witness such an incredible transformation into these iconic characters!

He memorably featured as death in the 1991 romp Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, reprising the role 30 years later for the 2020 picture Bill & Ted Face The Music.

More recently, Sadler has been involved with the 2019 miniseries “When They See Us,” which is a dramatic portrayal based on the Central Park Five case, directed by Ava DuVernay.

This year, you might have spotted him in the chilling horror film ‘Salem’s Lot, a new take on a Stephen King novel, reminiscent of The Shawshank Redemption.
