The Severance Season 2 Finale Reveals the Heartbreaking Truth Behind Cold Harbor

The task at hand is enigmatic and significant, and it appears to entail transforming your long-lost spouse into an entirely different individual – or multiple individuals – who have no recollection of themselves or the past life you two used to share.

After a long period of anticipation for those who tuned in during the initial release, the final episode of Severance Season 2 finally shed light on the mysteries surrounding Cold Harbor and Lumon’s true intentions towards Gemma (Dichen Lachman), even if it didn’t provide all the answers we were seeking.

In simpler terms, Ms. Cobel (Patricia Arquette) told inner Mark (Adam Scott) that the numbers he’s been working on for two years serve as a gateway into Gemma’s mind. She asked him, “What do you notice when you look at them? What do you sense…Sorrow. Joy. Malice. Fear…These clusters represent her emotions. The building blocks of her mind…Each file you’ve finished creates a new consciousness for her. A new inner personality…Cold Harbor is the final one.

Later on, Innie Mark, with Helly watching apprehensively, reluctantly finished the file. Then, Dr. Mauer and Mr. Drummond led Gemma into the Cold Harbor room on the testing floor, dressed in clothes similar to what she wore on the night they believed she died. Upon entering, her last innie form was asked to dismantle the crib that she and Mark had intended for their baby, a task designed to delve deeply into her past recollections and emotional scars to ensure there were no residual feelings from her outie in the severed innies.

Before she could fully disassemble the final part, the pair known as Innie and Outie Mark approached, having navigated through numerous dangers on their way to Cold Harbor room. Despite being soaked in Mr. Drummond’s blood and carrying the very weapon he had unknowingly used to eliminate Lumon security chief, there remained enough of the original Gemma to instinctively rely upon Mark, leading her to decide to follow him instead.

In our recent chat with Lorne from the Mammalians Nurturable department (played by Gwendoline Christie), I learned that once Cold Harbor is finished, Lumon intends to entomb my coworker, Gemma, along with her own sacrificial goat. This goat is supposed to guide her spirit towards Kier’s door. To be honest, I’m still not quite sure what that implies, but it sounds intriguing!

If Lumon was planning to kill Gemma regardless, it’s worth pondering their true intentions. What is the ultimate goal behind crafting these completely disconnected inner-beings? And how does this tie back to Kier and the Eagans? Many viewers have speculated that Lumon aims to develop an extremely productive workforce or a fabricated utopia where clients can escape all negative experiences. However, the truth still remains unclear.

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself on the edge of my seat during Episode 7 when Mr. Drummond hinted at Cold Harbor’s completion being “one of the most significant moments in this planet’s history.” Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll have to wait until Season 3 for further details. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the wait won’t be as lengthy as the last three years.
