The Serpent Queen season 2 episode 7 recap: A jam-packed episode that sets up what's to come in the finale

As a seasoned gamer of historical dramas who’s navigated through countless episodes of Game of Thrones and Vikings, I must say that The Serpent Queen has truly captured my attention. This penultimate episode, “A House Divided,” was a rollercoaster ride filled with unexpected twists and turns, keeping me on the edge of my seat.

As a long-time fan of historical dramas, I must say that I was thoroughly captivated by the penultimate episode of The Serpent Queen season 2. With its richly detailed costumes and immersive performances, it felt like stepping back into the opulent court of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine.

The Anjou problem

The scheme of Catherine to marry King Charles with Queen Elizabeth hits a snag when she learns that he is gravely ill with tuberculosis and has limited time left. In search of another suitable partner, Catherine considers Anjou, but her plans are dashed when she unexpectedly witnesses Anjou engaged in an orgy, along with a man performing a questionable service for him. The situation leaves no room for doubt about the state of his suitability.

Following their earlier argument, Catherine eventually visits Anjou and conveys that she acknowledges and appreciates him just as he is, with no desire for change. While her sentiment appears sincere given her maternal feelings, I suspect there may be additional factors behind this sudden shift in perspective, which will presumably be revealed in the upcoming finale next week.

The marriage game

From the outset of the season, it’s been evident that Princess Margot harbors feelings for Francois de Guise. However, this fact remains unknown to him as he is attracted to men. Moreover, there’s a significant gap in their ages. Yet, this age difference fails to dissuade the youthful princess. Intriguingly, when the Catholic League urges him to marry Margot, initially, he pushes her away using harsh words, aiming to safeguard her feelings. Interestingly, despite his hardened exterior, de Guise possesses a conscience that compels him to act with compassion.

However, his mother’s cunning plot doesn’t end so smoothly, as she converses with Margot to persuade the princess toward her mother’s cause. Initially, Catherine consents, but it’s evident that she harbors another plan. In the closing scenes of episode 7 from The Serpent Queen season 2, this becomes apparent. To maintain harmony with Edith, Catherine proposes to the Protestant leader that a marriage between Margot and Henry de Guise, Antoine’s son, would be advantageous. We’ll have to wait and see if this plan comes to fruition. One thing is certain though: Margot won’t take kindly to this development.

Another possibility could be that Charles might marry the Catholic CeCe of Austria as he has consented to baptism and conversion to Protestantism to maintain peace and satisfy Edith. However, upon their arrival, Edith claims she had a vision that Charles is a doomed king. What use would that be to her? It’s then that Catherine proposes the union between Margot and Henry instead. Eventually, King Charles gets baptized in the climactic scene. Moreover, the most crucial aspect of all – Catherine promises to hand over the regency to Edith once Margot and Henry get married. Interesting, isn’t it?

The traitors

It comes to light that siblings Rahema and Catherine’s brother, Alessandro, are involved romantically. In their conversation, it emerges that not only did Alessandro misappropriate funds from his sister, but he also attempted to secure an investment deal with Queen Elizabeth concerning the New World. He has even proposed that Rahema accompanies him. Catherine observes the couple and learns of Alessandro’s deceit, as well as the betrayal. Upon inquiry about the missing money, Rahema falsely denies it to Catherine.

In contrast to their disagreement in the sixth episode, Ruggeri did not leave Catherine behind. Instead, she asked him to help her interpret her visions, and there were six people conspiring against her: the Bourbons, the Guises, Rahema, Alessandro, Montmorency, and a possible seventh traitor who might be a child. We’ll likely discover the identity of this mysterious figure in the upcoming episode 8 of The Serpent Queen, titled “All Saints Day!”
