Following the suspenseful ending of last week, when Queen Elizabeth set foot in France, “The Serpent Queen” season 2 episode 6 finds Catherine De’ Medici warmly receiving the monarch at the French court. However, it appears that her strategy to win King Charles’s heart and hand in marriage may face obstacles due to the ongoing rivalry between him and his brother. It seems quite plausible that Queen Elizabeth is engaging in a strategic game at present, with her alleged marriage to Charles being a means to acquire power and influence over France. Moreover, it’s clear that she intends to manipulate him to carry out her desires. As for the trip, she advises Louis to maintain Edith as an ally and provides weapons to the Protestant leader. In essence, everything appears to be serving her ultimate goal.
In a clever turn of events reminiscent of the famed serpent queen, Elizabeth manages to make Charles and Anjou vie for her hand in marriage. They choose fencing as their competition, with the victor being the one who wins her heart. Catherine advises Anjou to let Charles win, but in a surprising twist, Charles starts coughing up blood near the end of the contest. Now, another royal child is unwell. In another part of the episode, Cardinal Charles’ faith in Edith grows stronger. Meanwhile, the Catholic League of France suspects a possible shift in his religious views. Montmorency encourages Charles to meet with Edith as a gesture of tolerance towards Protestants and acceptance of them.
