The Serpent Queen season 2 episode 4 recap: Another child lost

As a dedicated fan of historical dramas who has spent countless hours immersed in the tumultuous lives of European royalty, I must say that “The Serpent Queen” is truly captivating. The fourth episode of season 2, titled “Judas,” was another gripping installment that kept me on the edge of my seat.

In the latest episode of “The Serpent Queen,” titled “Judas,” Catherine finds herself mourning yet another child, Hercules, who met a tragic end at the hands of a Protestant man in episode 3. This unfortunate incident was instigated by Anjou’s actions. The heart-wrenching aftermath is now unfolding, as we delve deeper into season 2 on Starz. SPOILER ALERT:

The consequences of Hercules’ death

1. Due to a severe blow to the head, Hercules finds it hard to regain consciousness. Tragically, he succumbs and Catherine rushes back from Italy upon hearing about her children’s distress. She had always felt remorseful for leaving them unattended. The Holy Roman Emperor, now advanced in age, makes a surprise appearance at the funeral. In terms of actions, Catherine harbors anger towards Anjou. However, some of the Catholic populace aren’t as critical. They once viewed him as a deviant but now idolize him for drowning a Protestant leader.

Fervent followers linked with the Vatican are conducting unofficial third Baptisms, imitating a particular pattern. Cardinal Charles is urgging Anjou to lead a retaliatory military campaign in the forest due to his brother’s demise, which might intensify violence. However, his mother and Montmorency prevent him from embarking on this journey, leaving him essentially confined to his residence.

Without a doubt, Edith was already energized, and this incident has only strengthened her resolve to challenge both the Catholics and the royal family. It appears that Aabis has been assigned to eliminate Edith by means of poisoning, but even after consuming it themselves, neither Edith nor Aabis show any signs of harm. This event seems like a second miraculous occurrence. Given her quick wit, it’s plausible that she may have discovered the plot and the potion might have been harmless. By the end of the episode, it remains uncertain whether Aabis now respects or is merely feigning admiration for Edith.

Queen Elizabeth and Louis’ meeting gets steamy

In Catherine’s absence, Louis Bourbon decided to journey personally to England, where he met with Queen Elizabeth for trade negotiations. The queen asked him to deceive Edith into believing they were fully backing her, while in reality, Louis and the queen were plotting to undermine Edith’s power when the moment was opportune. This was due to Queen Elizabeth recognizing the growing influence of Edith.

In the evening’s events, I found myself drawn into a delicate dance with the queen, employing my charms to persuade him to seal our alliance on a hastily drafted document without consulting his legal advisors. Naturally, this was her intention from the start and we shared an intimate moment afterwards. I can only imagine the repercussions that will follow. Interestingly, the Duke of Guise, who was apprehended in episode 3 for the arson, has once more been set free. It seems Margaret harbors feelings for him, adding another layer of complexity to our story. Curious indeed!
