The secret eastern suburbs tier list: High society snitch reveals the REAL hierarchy among Sydney’s elites… and who’s fallen from the A-list
The eastern suburbs may look like a playground for Sydney’s young, hot and rich.
In essence, the dominant forces in the eastern region share striking similarities with high school students vying for popularity. Although they are mature and may possess a modicum of wisdom, it’s said that the same dynamics persist.
In private conversations at Vaucluse mansion events, Double Bay brunches, and Mimi’s lengthy lunches, there is much talk about which individuals are accepted into, and excluded from, the exclusive waterfront social circles.
As a devoted insider, I recently came across an amusing ‘ranking system’ that has been circulating among our circles on Discord. A reliable source within our community, who is always in the know, shared it with me.
In this context, the social circle is categorized into A, B, and C groups. You’ll find many well-known individuals as well as some debatable rankings – feel free to form your own opinion about their validity.
First up, the A-list…
THE A-LIST
At the forefront is Lou O’Neil (formerly Hay), a woman who happens to be the daughter of the late Donald Hay, a trailblazer in the brush manufacturing industry and the founder of Hayco.
In 2022, she got married to Jake O’Neil, who is a property developer, and happens to be the second oldest child of Denis O’Neil, a wealthy yacht broker and proprietor of Rose Bay marina, and his spouse Charlotte.
As a devoted admirer, I must say, I’m not the sole outsider with deep pockets who’s found myself tying the knot with the affluent O’Neil clan. That would be none other than our beloved Lou, the beauty and fashion icon!
Deborah Symond O’Neil, heiress to Aussie Home Loans and wife of eldest son Ned (married in 2018 in a grand wedding at the Whitsundays), is well-known among high society.
Poppy Tzaneros, formerly known as Poppy O’Neil, is connected with the same social groups. She is wedded to Anthony Tzaneros, who belongs to one of the original families behind the massive port logistics company ACFS.
In the group comes Bernadette Fahey, affectionately known as the ‘Queen of Pilates’, who tied the knot with Buildcorp COO Jordan Sukkar at a glamorous event in Sydney this past November.
She has a reputation as the personal fitness trainer for several prominent social figures in Sydney, such as Jade Yarbrough and Madeleine Holtznagel (who will be discussed further ahead).
Montarna Pitt, creator of thriving Sydney PR company The Audience Agency, has earned a spot on the prestigious list, a fact that’s not too unexpected considering her extensive network of connections.
In the vibrant heart of Sydney, I proudly claim my spot amidst the city’s trendsetting elite – a group that includes the inimitable Caroline Tran, a stylist and branding guru extraordinaire, and Kristina Macourt, whose words captivate and inspire. These two shining stars of our city scene have left an indelible mark on me as I eagerly follow their every move.
Additionally, Nadia Fairfax, known for her prominent status in Sydney society and as a renowned fashion blogger, has also made it onto the A-list. Her husband, Michael Wayne, is the managing director of Medallion Financial and frequently contributes to Sky Business.
Regardless of rumors suggesting a separation from her husband Andy El-Bayeh, Harriet Williams continues to maintain a prominent position within high society circles.
Harriet, who works as a kinesiologist at Inner Remedy, comes from an affluent background in Sydney, contrastingly, Andy serves as the chief creative officer and founder of Example, a creative agency.
Alongside Hoda Waterhouse (formerly known as Hoda Vakili), and their sibling Rey-Hanna Vakili, are significant figures within the main social circle of the eastern suburbs.
Hoda, who is an architect, is wedded to Tom Waterhouse, a bookmaker known for his connections in horse racing, while Rey’s spouse is the wealthy heir of a poultry empire, Johnny Ingham.
Tamie Ingham, Johnny’s sibling, previously partnered in business with Jasmine Stefanovic and is married to renowned chef Guillaume Brahimi, occupies a prestigious spot among the upper echelons of society in Emerald City.
THE B-LIST
Although they may not be the most prominent figures in Sydney’s upper circles, the individuals on the B-list are definitely worth keeping an eye on.
From what I’ve heard, it seems that among the B-group, Pip Edwards, the visionary behind P.E Nation, holds a prominent position. Despite amassing a fortune in the fashion industry and being self-made, her frequent appearances in tabloids may hinder her from ascending to the A-list’s lofty peaks.
Dina Broadhurst, often referred to as ‘the nude artist’ or ‘The East’s Figure,’ maintains a position within the group of prominent artists (however, it is our opinion that her work and physique should place her among the top A-list artists).
Known for managing numerous high-profile clients, public relations expert Roxy Jacenko is typically associated with A-list status. However, following her move to Singapore with her family in 2023, it seems she has shifted to the B-list category.
Jackie O’ Henderson is actively revamping her public persona, transforming it from a shock jock on the radio to a more family-friendly, trendy influencer that appeals to Generation X women, similar to the style of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop brand.
If wealth determined social standing, she would certainly rank among the elite, but her past controversies on air have kept her in the secondary category. However, with the signing of a 10-year $200 million contract in 2023, it’s clear that she will be laughing all the way to the bank.
Madeline Holtznagel, a 27-year-old and partner of Sydney’s leading hospitality entrepreneur Justin Hemmes (age 52), is now on the B-list. The couple is thrilled to announce that they are anticipating their first child.
In the midst of the upper echelon, we find Ellie Aitken, who made news towards the end of 2021 when her marriage to prominent stockbroker Charlie Aitken fell apart due to his affair with her confidante, Hollie Nasser.
THE C-LIST
Now, there’s nothing wrong with being a C-lister.
Although people who appear on this list might have been tongue-in-cheek, the individuals in Class C are undeniably wealthier, more renowned, and more alluring than any of us could aspire to be. Fortunately, they don’t find themselves on lists from D to Z, which we refrain from publicizing out of respect for their privacy.
Previously mentioned, Hollie Nasser gained significance following her involvement in the love triangle of the eastern suburbs. Despite this, she hasn’t made many noteworthy appearances since then.
Joining her is Kristin Fisher, a highly sought-after beautician from Sydney, who manages her own salon named after herself in Double Bay.
Despite being renowned as an exceptional ‘eyebrow artist’, my reputation faced a setback last year following an encounter with the law. This incident led a magistrate to express disapproval towards the careless drug usage among the elite residents of the eastern suburbs, particularly cocaine.
Model Laura Csortan gained popularity as a Sydney “It” girl back in the late ’90s, after winning several beauty pageants. Nowadays, she tends to stay out of the limelight.
The sisters, Jade and Jasmine Yarbrough from Queensland, complete the C-list grouping. Notably, Jasmine is married to television personality Karl Stefanovic, while regrettably for Jade, her most notable achievement is being entangled in the ‘Noosa rumble’ with her ex-partner Michael Clarke.
