The Sandman season 2 films surprising scene with Mark Hamill's Mervyn Pumpkinhead

As a long-time fan of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman comics, I have eagerly awaited each new development regarding the upcoming Netflix adaptation. The recent leaks about season 2 production, allegedly featuring elements from volume 9 of the series, have left me feeling both excited and apprehensive.

Production on The Sandman season 2 began in November 2023, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the release of new episodes after a lengthy wait. Previews hint that this upcoming season may feature an expanded scope compared to initial expectations. Recently leaked images suggest, albeit unconfirmed, that the storyline will delve into The Kindly Ones, the near-conclusion of the graphic novel series.

I was excitedly scrolling through the latest batch of behind-the-scenes photos when my eyes landed on an intriguing image. There, holding a rifle and looking quite out of place among the bustling film set, was Mervyn Pumpkinhead – our beloved janitor from The Dreaming, brought to life by Mark Hamill’s captivating voiceover. Of course, this wasn’t just any ordinary day at the office for Mervyn; fans will recognize this scene as a pivotal moment from The Kindly Ones, the epic climax of the comic series.

Additionally, the Fates and Lyta Hall, portrayed by Razane Jammal, have returned to filming, along with new cast member Ann Skelly as Nuala.

When those set leaks were uncovered, fans flocked to express their disapproval in large numbers. In the first season of “The Sandman,” only the initial two volumes from Neil Gaiman’s comic series were adapted, along with a touch of volume 3. The sudden leap to cover volume 9 in season 2 is quite unexpected, given that the creator has previously suggested a planned span of five seasons.

If the new season is said to consist of 12 episodes, attempting to conclude the story up to “The Kindly Ones” could be risky business. The narrative would likely feel crammed and overloaded, necessitating the unfortunate omission of certain comic book elements.

Is The Sandman ending early?

As someone who has been following the world of streaming television for years, I can tell you that the news about the “The Sandman” updates has piqued my interest, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the show with season 2. From my experience, I’ve learned that networks and streamers often use different terminology when discussing the continuation of a series. In this case, Netflix referred to the renewal as an “extension” rather than a “season 2.”

In the first season of The Sandman, some scenes were shot but not yet aired for use in future seasons, such as season 2 and beyond. It’s feasible that current filming for season 2 includes sequences that won’t be broadcast until later stages of the show. These could potentially be flash-forwards. At this point, everything remains uncertain.

As a dedicated fan of Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” series, I eagerly anticipate the premiere of season 2. Having grown up with this captivating tale, its influence on my imagination and love for storytelling is immeasurable. Though Netflix has yet to announce an official release date, the constant flow of cast announcements gives me hope that we’re getting closer. The excitement builds within me as I imagine the enchanting world of Dream unfolding once more on the small screen. Every new detail brings me a step further into this fantastical realm and rekindles my anticipation for this magical journey.
